Ok, go to the bathroom and grab a bite to eat, this might take awhile. I was talking to my cousin last night, they are renting a house out on 80 acres in NE Iowa. This place belongs to my aunt"s late husband"s mother and brother. Does that make sence? Anyways, he was saying once they"re new kid arrives, they"ll be moving down to Florida and the house will probably be empty. I"ve allways liked this place, big house, mostly flat land, good outbuildings, beautiful farmstead. The land is rented out to a good nieghbor of theirs. I"ve been thinking for a while now about moving up that way and getting a farm, but firgured I"d need to find a job and a place first. When he mentioned this plan of them leaving, it got me thinking...should I ask my late step-uncle"s mom about renting the house and possibly later renting/ buying the place from them? I have a bunch of cousins that live in the area and I know a few other people up there. I can do concrete and masonry work, and I have a Class B CDL, so I think I could find a job up there. What do you all suggest to a young guy, should I ask and possibly uproot myself, or should I let this idea pass? Thanks for any help.

This is the stuff of which opportunities are made. You need to try, so when you're my age, you're not still kicking yourself for passing it by. Try to work out some way to buy it (rather than renting) if you can (doesn't matter if the land renter is still there- you can buy subject to his lease), so you can lock in a price. Only problem I see offhand is you're a shirt-tail relative, so not likely to get a great "family" deal on it.

Rich you don't have it now so you have nothing to lose by asking. Worst case scenerio is they say no and your where you are as if you didn't ask. I bought my farm from family and looking at the mortgage I thought I was crazy but now it's paid for. I was ten years older than you. GO FOR IT!

I think the real question is "When do you leave?"

Good luck,

Yeah, If you realy want to farm it might be an oppertunity. I got my start on a more hare-brained scheme than that.

Well, you don't say how young, or how long you've been thinking, or what your obligations are (wife? kids?:risking yourself is one thing, but risking others...). Stan is right about the grass, too...but if you have no real obligations, one thing to think of is: if you don't at least look into it, will you wonder for the rest of your life if you should've at least talked to them about it???

Sorry for not giving more information on myself. I"m 21, ne wife, no girlfriend, no kids, it"s just me and my dog. As far as obligations, I have about $2500 left to pay off on my truck and a couple small bills. I am working now, so I"d need to find a job with as good or better benefits and same hourly wage. I"ve been thinking about this for a year or so, but not til lately have I given it serious thought.

What will you be leaving? If it is good or better you might want to stay where you are. Are you working now? Some times grass always looks better on the other side of the fence. Stan
