What do you think my chances are?

Sometime soon, I want to try to track down my grandfather's tractor. It was a John Deere 730 Standard Diesel. It had electric start, non-adjustable front axle, and no rockshaft. It was sold out of our family 10 or 20 years ago, in southern Alberta. I don't think anybody knows the serial number of it. Does anybody know how many tractors were built like this? Realistically, do I stand any chance of finding this tractor again?

send me your e-mail address. I sold a 730 Std that was originally shipped to Canada. I think it was from Saskatoon.

Try an advert or letter to the local newspaper, or if posible get the newsdesk to run a short article. Hopefully someone in your area may remember buying the tractor. Hope it works for you. David in England

Start a log, a simple one. Put down EVERYTHING family can recall about Tractor. Review any records carefully(anyone work on it, maybe ordered parts? etc). Any Province permits, licenses needed there? With complete desc, query older dealers/clubs as to how rare(if rare) your unit was. Any Federal farm eqpmt census/records? Write everything, every call etc down; if you don't,after a bit you'll forget what you've done or not done; review the log every 3-4 weeks, things'l come to mind you hadn't thought of. Talk to people who your Gdpa was close to/worked with. he might've commented who he was selling to or where it was going . If it never turns up you'll know you gave it your best shot. Good luck.

You can start by posting all the details you have on the John Deere board here at YTmag. Can you find out who he bought it from? They might have bought it new and the dealer might have records. good luck. Tom

If you don't try, you sure won't find it!Chances are pretty slim, but you won't know til you try. Besides, it'll keep you out of the pool halls. Good luck!

I hate to say it, but chances of finding that tractor without the serial number is zero. If he bought it new, is the dealer still in business - if so he might have serial number records, or if the dealer worked on it, he might have the serial number.

There were a lot of them made. If you can get the serial # you could get lucky and even find it in the register here.

I don't think we have the serial # written down anywhere, and I don't think anybody remembers it. It was bought used, so the dealer won't know anything. All I can do is narrow it down by the options it had. I'm going to try to track who bought it after my uncle sold it, and where it went from there. I'm not holding out too much hope, but I want to give it a try anyway. Maybe my lucky stars will line up. ;-)

It took 20 years of looking but I found the JD 70 diesel standard Dad traded off. Worth every minute spent when I fire that old girl up.
