How to remove stubborn steering wheels?

Since I started messin' with old tractors about a year ago, I have destroyed 4 steering wheels and 2 gear pullers. I end up mashing the hollow threaded shaft and crushing the plastic steering wheel as well. The best I've been able to do is soak it in WD-40 for 2 weeks, then cut the plastic back to expose the steel hub and repair the threads after everything is finally apart. Is there a trick to this that I don't know? It's taking all the fun out of restoring them! Any advice is welcome!

Thanks! Mike G.

Like others have said, don't waste your time with WD-40. It's ok as a spray lubricant, but doesn't penetrate nearly as well as PB or Kroil.

After soaking it with PB, I loosen the nut, but don't take it off. Then I stand on the running boards with my hands on the wheel at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. I pull with all my might as I rock the wheel back and forth. It has always come off for me. If you take the nut off, you'll find yourself laying on your back behind the tractor wondering how you got there.

gear/wheel pullers drawn up tightly on the wheel hub; then rap the end while its under tension. THis has worked for me. Also make sure if you are pulling (with hands) on the steering wheel to leave the nut ON a turn or two or it may smack you in the face when it comes loose. (don't ask me how I know this)

I agree w/Gene Davis, use PB blaster and air hammer. It'll loosen up quicker than any thing else that I have tried.

Some come off too darn easy. Had one come off when I was half way up the ramps while loading an AC-C.The guy that restored it had cobbled it up. It sure pays to check it out after replacing it!!W4

Tranny fluid or PB blaster works better then WD ever will. Then a way to hammer on it and or heat it also helps a lot

Mike,

I removed the wheel from my 1973 Ford 2000 a couple of years ago when I rebuilt the steering box. After thinking, without actually uttering, many of Fawteen's expletives, I finally pulled up on the steering wheel from two sides while I had my son operate my air hammer with a punch end on it in the middle of the steering shaft. After much pulling and air hammering, the wheel finally popped off. It isn't easy under the best of circumstances.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

I use PB Blaster. Spray it on, wait 30 minutes, tap the stud and the steering wheel a few times with a ball pien hammer, and yank the wheel right off.

I removed the original steering wheel from my 1949 Earthmaster by taking the nut loose from the shaft, but leaving it still on the shaft by about 1/3 the length of the threads and aplying some penetrating oil to the threads and then I took my air chisel and got at the rear of the steering wheel as close to the shaft as possible and let it hammer for a couple of minutes and turned it 1/2 a turn did the same then went to the original spot and it popped right off.
