I am going to be cutting my 8 acres of alfalfa in the morning.. no rain till tuesday! went out just now and looked it over, and it seems a lot of it is laying down. I think what it is was it go so tall and all the wind and rain we have had the last week just knocked it down.. but will this make any problems for me? or will the haybine cut it alright? just getting worried is all I guess... first time I have ever used a moco.. thanks! tim Shultz

Just my two cents based on my experience. Hay that is laying down will have a tendency to stand later in the day. If the reel is set right you can usually run any direction in downed hay. The reel will pick it up and over the cutter bar even when traveling in the direction the hay is leaning. Different conditions present different problems Most complaints about sickle bar mower conditioners are a result of something not adjusted right.

You just refurbished the cutting head didn't you? The only time we really have trouble with our moco (New Idea 290) is right after a rain it'll plug up. I was cutting some short stuff in a very light sprinkle today and it cut fine. After the major downpour I tried to cut the 2nd feild but it just wouldn't go through very good.

In downed hay, it'll pick it up just fine going against the direction it is downed, going with it'll just take what's above the guard unless you go really slow so the reel will pick it up. Still won't get it all and it makes for a lot of shifting, so I ussually use one gear and pull back the Multi-power (1st high on the 285) going with the grain.

Today I had my Ollie 1600 on the haybine as the Massey 285 was tied up on the 14'r I'm fixing up right now(just bought it, waiting for parts) I was in 5th gear under and it cut just fine. If it was downed, I would have used 4th gear and pulled back going with the grain. I'll have to try and get a picture if I can cut more tomorrow.

I'm going in the morning too. Probably isn't 10 bales on the whole 46 acres. :>(

It was looking so darned good early on too.

No rain till tuesday? They just said rain tonight and tomorrow, heck it is pouring right now. Have fun trying to cut that downed hay. Two of the neighbors already told us they wanted us to cut theirs since it was down and we have a discbine. Those sickle mowers have a habit of plugging in tough conditions. Downed hay and moist ground are not a good mix for those machines. Better wait till afternoon when it would be the driest conditions.

If the weather isn't cooperating youre wasting your time and making a mess. I've had this discussion with my father in law many times.
FIL: Thought you'd be baling.
Me: It's not ready.
FIL: Better try and bale it, they're calling for rain tommorow.
Me: Doesn't matter what they're calling for, it's not ready today.
FIL: It's supposed to rain tommorow. It'll spoil it.
me: I'd rather have it spoil in the field than the barn.
FIL: Suit yourself.

You might want to wait till the dew is off later in the morning so it is off the ground.
