Locking differential sticky?

Hi All,

I have a MF 175, not multi-power, 8x2 trans. Nice tractor. When I'm pulling a chisel plow sometimes I need to hit the differential lock pedal(at least that's what I think it is, makes both the wheels turn at the same rate) to have greater traction. Then I need it to disengage for a tight turn, but it seems to stay locked for some undefined amount of time. Is there something I can do to get it to release quickly? I've tried backing up and other things, but I can't figure out what get's it to disengage.

Thanks much,
Keith

Will probably stay in until power/drive is removed. Tapping a brake with power on will not fetch it off. Need to be shutting down on power at same time. Not easy if you are drawing an implement in the ground! All assuming it is not held in by the linkage, of course. It should drop out when there is no load on the drive train.
Regards, RAB

I'll give the breaks a try, but so far that has not worked. I'll try one, then the other, then both. I'll also get out the WD40 to see if that helps.

Nothing like plowing right into that big rock you are trying to avoid... ;^)

Thanks for the advice,
Keith

It could be just sticky from lack of use over the years so you might solve your problems by crawling underneith your tractor with a can of wd 40 and spraying the linkage or it could be the type that requires you to tap the brakes to disengage it, the Allis Chalmers 7000 and 8000 series had this but I haven't a clue about masseys. try that and see.

The wheel which is going slower needs to become the faster of the two. It will release when the wheel which is slower turns faster at least momentarily. This can be accomplished by turning, backing, or momentarily hitting the appropriate brake.
