I started out the year with 79 cows and calves. Haven't had any rain since March and sold 20. Today I took another 15 and will probably have to sell more within the next 2 weeks. My hay field is about 5 inches tall and brown. I have got about enough grass to last 2 weeks. I have been through droughts before but this is the worst because it started before the hay season. They usually start after July. Prayers needed BigMarv

It's not any fun for sure Marv and cost too much to buy them back till market goes back down. I guess none of that rain in Houston and Louisianna went your way ? Been dry here 6-7 years now and had to sell all our cows 3 years ago so I feel for you. About all you can do is pencil out the feed cost of keeping them or sell some or all while price is higher and hope to buy back later. Last year was wet here but back to dryer than before now and many here are doing the same thing selling several off. They extended the emergency hay & grazing on CRP but don't know what good that does with dry non palitable grasses and they still have to supplement feed them. We got to worry now about who has cattle on CRP and where during grass fires now too. There are other supplements you can find besides cubes and high $$ hay. Cotton burrs, junk grinder hay and distillers grain products to mix for your own supplement ration but it cost to haul those too. Good luck and prayers for more rain for all of us in need of it.

Same situation here. Sale barn in Sterling Colorado is running weekly auctions (normally monthly) because everyone is selling...nobody has grass, and nobody has hay. Lots of herds going down in numbers. They just opened up emergency grazing on CRP, that will get some people through for another month, if no rain by then...going to be cheap cows this summer/fall, then expensive next spring if we get rain...

My Dad like to tell the story how 2 of his cows ate the rest of his herd. In a dry year in the 1930s, he kept selling cows to buy feed until he was down to two. In other words, these two ate the rest!

I know how you feel. We had 3 tenths in March, 1.4 in. in April and about 1 inch in May. Made 0.8 tons per acre of hay. Grazed cows for 32 days and back in the dry lot they went. Feeding hay and corn gluten/soy hull pellets every day now. Pasture and hay fields will crunch under you feet now. Fire danger is getting high again. Plus it's getting in the 90's now with wind almost every day.

I sold 4 cows and all the fall calves a month early. Going to try and ride this out,but if it doesn't rain soon I'll have to sell them all. I'm not alone. Some have already sold out in this area. I saw some of the poorest cows at the sale barn this past Monday as I've seen in 25 years.

Very hard to find hay for sale within 150 miles now. With shipping at $3 per mile and hay at $40 per roll(4x4 rolls) I think I'll sell out before jumping in that kind of deal.

I've never wished for a hurricane but thinking about putting in an order for a large tropical storm tonight. Heck a good snow would be great too. You know it's getting real dry when you get excited over a heavy dew.

Lets all pray!!! I hope you get rain soon too.

Gosh, I wish you had some of our rain. Still have 2 ten acre fields of alfalfa that we can't get first cutting off of because of the rain in Michigan.Hay is pretty cheap in Michigan right now. Gene

You are not alone on this. I'm not in too bad of shape because of irrigation, othewise it'd be awful bad here. Yesterday I sold every bale of hay I'll raise this year, to one hay broker, for what I thought was a very good price. He seemed to think the same thing. Stopped by a local business with a scale and he says he's been weighing over 500 tons of hay a day heading out of the area, for Texas, Nebraska and Colorado mostly. David

I feel for you. I'm feeding square bales to the horses.. a flake at a time. can't even get rounds right now.. so am sweeping up the barn floor every night to go throw some hay to the cow. Florida has had about 3 days of rain this year...

I wish I could give you half of the rain we have had in Michigan for the year, lots so far about 2-3 inches today alone. What state are you in.

I know what you mean. I usually finish haying around the first week in April, not this year, I'm still feeding hay in June and the pasture crunches when you walk in it. Hope we get rain soon or there isn't going to be much of a second cutting.
