NH8160 with a bad cough!

My diesel has a bad cough. It acts like it is not getting fuel, almost quits then fires back up. This started while spreading manure. Just all of a sudden. Tractor finally quit before I could get out of the field. So we changed both fuel filters, bled the system, and got home. I have now dismantled the primery filter head and cleaned the passages with a pipecleaner, blown air through the line back to the tank, Have checked the fuel flow after both filters (strong at both),Checked for power at the solenoid on the injection pump-good lite, Removed air filter, found it clean, air intake was clear, Ran tractor with air filter out ( ran without coughing after this). Took it out for a road gear test drive, and she starts to quit again( after 1600-1700 rpm). Tractor would sit and idle without any problem when I started my check list, but would start to cough and die out as you went past 1100 rpm. The dealership did a full service 300 hrs ago, and trctor has run fine since. They are at a loss as to what the problem is. Keep saying fuel delivery problem, or injection pump. Does this sound like a blocked injector? or a bad pump? At 2700 hrs, I sure don't want to rebuild the pump! There are three other tractors feeding off of the same fuel source, and they have not had any problems. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Have not had time to work on this. We are in full harvest mode, and my harvestor decided to eat the fan housing bottom Fri. nite. I think I will be buying some expensive sheet metal. Got some rain days coming, so will try to fix this tractor, finish rebuilding a forage box, fix the harvestor, and keep the rest of the farm running as well. Some seasons, I just hate working for myself!

The only good way to test is with a temporary fuel supply - first hook it up directly to injector pump supply - if tractor runs good then u can rule out all pump problems - if not then i guess u know

next hook it so it flows into the first fuel filter - it it still works then u can rule out filter problems - if it doesn't work could be a bad filter - something in those lines, etc...

if it is still working then it has to be backward of the fuel filters - I have heard of little pieces of plastic from the molding process coming off in the fuel tank and plugging things - but only on a new tractor or new tank i would think

Definitely check that filler cap. Had a GMC diesel acted like that; would idle forever, but try going down the road and no telling how far you'd get. The lower the fuel level in the tank, the farther you could go. Beat my brains out for weeks, then one day, on a whim, I spun the cap off and what do you know, vent was plugged with dust & dirt, so it would draw to a vacuum in the tank and then the pump couldn't pull any more fuel.

Good luck,
Anthony

Hi Kent,

Did you check with the filler cap off? Could be a bad breather. Also check the power source to the lift pump, and/or verify the flow from the lift pump. I'm not sure what that tractor has, but I'm guessing that it's got a lift pump built into the top part of the filter housing. What you describe sounds most like a fuel supply problem, possibly from a weak lift pump. You should also check and make sure the fuel return line is not pinched off. HTH.
