Well ,,it's tornado time in iowa again . I have an old trailer house that we have on some camping /hunting land in NE Iowa . I have been up there at least twice a year when some real nasty storms have hit . Knowing how trailers are tornado magnets.I was wonder what would be cheap, easy storm shelter or celler to build? What do you have if you live in storm belt and have no basement ?

Bryan, Here in NW Mo, most concrete plants are pouring two 1,100 gal septic tanks together to make storm cellars. You can have these delivered on site. I've also seen lengths of 4 or 6' culvert pipe used as well. Remember, it doesn’t have to be real comfortable. You usually aren’t in there that long.

Nothing will be cheap but your own labor to build it. Many are getting old metal tanks and cutting them in sections and burying those. You can find a fair size tank and just need one end in it with a sand and gravel floor and put some type of door or hatch on other end and some steps or ladder in it. Someone was making them ready made and welded up just to bury and set in. Also seen some made of fiberglass to be buried. The safe room is kind of expensive overkill for just a trailer house but if others in area go in on it with you? They put those safe rooms in houses.

I had some relatives that built a single level home in Tornado Alley. Beneath the floor, they buried a Septic Tank. They use that tank for their tornado shelter. Might work great even in a field.

oldfarmtractor: did those relatives with the septic tank under the house think to build themselves an escape route in case the house was collapsed instead of being blown away? (I"m a pessimist as well as a conspirary addict).

Bryan, Take an Ocean going contaner and do something simular to Sloroll's pic of that school bus. The top would have more support and offer more protecton than the thin top of a school bus. In the event of a direct hit of a car/castiron bathtub/,ect,etc. 20 ft models run in the $1800 price range. The fellow who thought up Slowroll bus pic was surenough thinking. That is thinking outside of the Box! Good Luck on this project.
Later,
John A.

Chaining, cableing or tying down the trailer to some buried concrete anchors works well. There is nothing like Bubba looking confused after a windstorm while looking for his trailer. All that is left is the concrete blocks it was only sitting on.

I have some of those screw in anchors for the trailer,, but if it gets hit ,,trailer will be pretty much gone .Think I'd like my chances underground. Some kind of block or treated lumber in ground. Maybe a concrete sewer junction box ?

Down here in Missouri they now sell a storm shelter which is a 10 foot clavet cut in half and has a cement floor and they cover all but one end with dirt. Biggest problem I see with them is you have to crawl in to them and then lay down since there not enough room to stand

A cave works well, ya I know you don't build them you buy them. My place has 3 of them. But if your not lucky enough to have a cve a lager water tank that is dug in/covered with dirt works well and is cheap if you can find an old water tank. Or a large calvet with one end open with a steel door also works well but may also be hard to find. Then of course there the good old cement shelter but that costs a lot of $$
