This is sure not the way you want to get woke up at midnight, but we were. No power to the building, no fuel inside or out, no machinery, last year's hay, no insurance on the old hay barn cause what could catch it on fire? Don't know, gonna havta wait for the fire marshal this morning. The last hay, about 12 bales have been in there a year. Thank goodness no one was hurt and it wasn't two weeks from now when I would have had all the new hay put up. Guess it will stay outside this year. Harley Link

Sorry to hear of your loss, glad no one was hurt. I am always fearful of fire. When we moved from (the old place) as my fauther called it, some nut job came in and burned all the buildings to the ground. Harley Just hang in there. Stan

Harley, so sorry about your loss, but at least no people, equipment, or livestock lost. In 1969 Dad lost a shed where my equipment shed sits. It had old hay in one end, from the summer before, this was Feb. No tractors were in it and fire dept kept it down long enought to get all the equipment out except a 2 wheel trailer. Dad used the bulldozer to spread the hay the next day to let it finish burning, and right at the bottom was a cavity with just ashes, about the size of a wash tub. He allways thought it started right there. Fire Marshals were not avalible back then for the country. The wind was blowing very hard from the south that day and the hay was in the south end, wood building.

Harley, Surenough sorry to hear about your loss. The loss of a structure will put a cramp in things for a while. I know for my place is allready a ...structure challanged place. Simply just never had a real machinery/hay shed ever bullt. Just thankful that no-one was hurt, or loss of livestock or machinery. I recon that the only thing left to do is call a local Dozer man and have him come out, dig a hole and bury it, then start planning the next shed.
Catch you after awhile.
Later,
John A.

At least it was only material things. Old hay and buildings can always be replaced.
Still, a lousy way to start the day.

Harley, Sorry to see you lost your hay barn.

Looking at the pictures brings back memories of losing our farrowing house in 1960.

Thats my earliest memories in life. I was 3.

All I remember is the firetrucks here.

Gary

Darn it Harley sorry to hear about the fire, not only loosing the barn and it's contients is the mess to clean up. I remember years ago there was a lean to on the west side of the barn where I kept the round baler, I had just unhooked the baler and smelled something that didn't seem right, got looking around and there was a sparrows nest up in the rafters with smoke coming out of it, got up there and there was a burning cigerette in it, guess the sparrow picked it up and was trying to use for it's nest. If I wouldn't have caught it I'm sure it would have set the barn on fire.

Sorry to here that Harley, sure hope it is not what we had around here a few years back where some nut case was running around putting a match to old houses and barns . I got a call on nite from a friend that they needed me down at the one farm that i was renting as the old house was on fire and the fire dept could not figure out how to get in to the farm . So i run down as fast as my pickup could go opened up the gates and led the trucks up thru the pasture one of the cheif's rode with me in the pick up and as we were comming up the lane we saw two guys running out of the barn and they ran up the old ramp in to the strip cut . They had been watchen the house burn as it was fully engulfed and they also had set two fires in the barn . The one cheif and i tryed our best to run them down but they got away . They were able to save the barn but not the old house that was built in 1836 . A couple years ago it started all over again and there was three or four barns scatterd around this are that got a match put to them lots of equipment and livestock lost in them. They did cautch those guys .

Sorry for your loss.

Lightning is a major cause of fires. The old timers put up lightning rods for a reason! Each year we have 1 or 2 lightning caused structure fires out of the 8 or 10 we'll see.

Had a haybarn a couple years back...lightning hit. Young kid rented this farm away from his family's "home" farm so he didn't have a backhoe or front-end loader there. We called a local contractor to bring down his excavator -- back in the day of small square bales, you'd just use a bunch of firefighters to haul them out and split 'em open. Can't handle large rounds with just manpower!

If there was no electrical storm, my next suspicion is someone with matches.

The Fire Marshal I'm sure will also ask about other activities recently in the barn -- to rule out the odd stuff like the classic linseed oil soaked rags, or a spark from a welding torch that smouldered for hours. Anyone smoke who could've dropped a smouldering cigarette?

Nope, nobody smokes, no shop work done out there, no electricity to it, no machinery parked in it to provide a spark or short. I've taken to leaving the old girls outside since reading on here that they sometimes cause this. I guess a paint job every four or five years is a lot cheaper than losing a tractor. Don't know. No new hay in there, and only about a dozen bales of old hay. Will have to see. Harley

Hey Allen,

'Bout a million years ago I was in the Boy Scouts.

Can vividly remember them teachin' us how to cook with nothing more than sunlight and a couple of pieces of tin to reflect the heat.

It was alfully hot around here yesterday. :>(

Man so sorry to hear of the fire, just thank the Lord no lifestock or people were involved. Times like this makes me wish we were neighbors in location as well as sprit. I bet you would have a yard full of volunteers to put up a new hay barn. Keep the faith Harley; Bob

Thanks guys, the fire marshal just left, and he said he would leave the report open, but it looked to him like spontaneous combustion from the hay that was put in two months ago. It got up to almost 100 degrees here yesterday and he thinks inside that tin haybarn it just plain got hot enough to cook off and then finally lit. Can't say enough about the folks that came out with the fire department. They worked their butts off and got here 6 minutes after the call was made at almost midnight. Gonna be a little something extra in their kitty at the station this week. Again thanks guys, it's just stuff, and nobody or nothing got hurt. Harley

Harley, Sorry to hear about the loss of hay and building and glad no one was hurt but spontaneous combustion was first thing on my mind reading on down to here. Been a firefighter 14 years and seen it happen many times at dairies around here with a leaky roof on a hay barn or leaks under hay tarps letting it get wet and then when it warms up it goes. Most of them just stack the hay outside now or under big pole roofs and we still get hay fires. We have even had them light up in December when it warmed in the 80s but had wet weather right before that. The large cotton modules they put up now will light up from spontaneous combustion too when cotton is put up too wet or wet weather comes and then it gets warm. We always liked to stack our round bales in several different stacks away from things so lightning didn't get the whole stack. Hot wire fences are another bad thing around a hay stack. Good luck putting up the new hay.
