Okay, Let's go over this one more time,

Coming 62 years old and last week, I got pitched on my ear off as many horses. That one joker tryed his darndest to roll on me too; don't think he likes me very much.

This morning, the neighbor's 4-year-old bull tears down the fence and got in with the cattle, so I figure I'm gonna play this one smart, right? Hopped on the ATV to separate him out and run him back home.

Easier said than done.

Coming up out of a draw and the silly ATV comes up and over backwards on me, throws me in the dirt snout first and commences to roll sideways 5 times clear to the bottom of the canyon. Lit on it's feet and sat there idlin' waiting fer me to sop up the blood and get back to work.

Dunno, I just might have to rethink this darned cowboy business. :>(

I used to be a bit wild on the wheeler, found that if I took the wife with me the landing was a bit softer when we went over backwards...course the kisses and nice dinners got to be a might sparse....decided it might be prudent to throttle back a notch er two...everyone seems happier that way...lol

Glad you are ok, atv's are great but they will get you in a heartbeat. I dropped mine in a hole two years ago, broke my collarbone and wrecked my shoulder. Took 2 trips to the bone cutters to fix that mess. Be careful out there!

Hi Guy,

I was all cranked up to buy one of the little things (this one belongs to my neighbor).

Then, I started reading all of your comments. Maybe I'll just stick with the saddle horses. :>(

Since I take it you are new to ATV's, and want the wheels to stay on the ground, you could get yourself a not so powerful one, like 250-300cc 4wd machine would be pretty good. Something heavy and low powered, like a Honda Fourtraxx 300 with full time 4wd, course with a full time 4wd machine, you won't be able to do donuts...ever. I would also suggest a Polaris Xplorer 300 2 stroke 4wd, lots of low end power and selectable 2wd/4wd, it'll do donuts easily and will do a wheelie, but not all that well, it won't do one unless I am trying to do one, very simple to drive and has an automatic transmission, which is super nice.

That's what I was on, Jon.

One of these days, I'll go out there and take a couple of shots of that real estate.

Some of the roughest in the state and all but totally vertical. :>)

And I intentionally do wheelies on my ATV. They do go over backwards pretty easy if you stab the throttle alittle too hard going up over a steep bank. So I take it now problably the some of the plastic is smashed and the handlebars need readjusting now?. You ever try playing in the mud?, I don't know what it is, but once you do, there is something that makes you want to go play in it some more 8'D

Dog gone it, Allen! Ya' gotta' be more careful!

Glad you around to tell the tale though. The darn four wheelers kill a few cattleman every year here in Montana. Usually side hillin' too fast and hit a bump and she goes a..hole over teakettle. Had a neighbor backed up in to an irrigation ditch. Luckily the ditch was empty and she only broke a wrist. Course i have a few neighbors that were darn near killed by cayuses so I don't think anything we use on the ranch is really Murphy proof. So be careful out there.

Yeah Allan, they just had an auction to sell the tractor collection of my cousin who was killed on one of those darn widowmakers. Every year there is empty seats around the Christmas table from 4 wheeler upsets. Do be careful.

Alan, I know just how you felt,I've been there&done that. Went out to set feed for deer on a 4 wheeler 4x4 with my grand son,he on one and me on the other.got off the road and a brier caught the throtel? and proceded to run that thing wide open smack into a tree, climb the tree and land over on top of me. thank the lord I didn't get killed. and I rode those and motorcycles of all kind all my life. You just have to have respect for anything with a motor. Ouch Ouch! Yep, those motorized hosses will rear up too just when you least expect it. Did that on one with old suspension and rolled over sideways making me see stars in daylight after hitting my head on rock! If you got by with no stitches or broke bones ya got lucky. Some nuts here can rope a good size steer off a ATV... not me.

But thankfully you're still here Allan. in reply to Allan In NE, 07-02-2006 11:48:53
That could have been a lot worse. Those dern ATVs, though lighter than a horse, aint quite so soft as a horse.:-(

Not only that, but if'n that bull did'nt wanna play, it's make a nice paper weight out've an ATV. Seems a bull without a sense'O humor has a bit more resect for a horse.

Allen, this"s not like breakin" horses, leaning back to balance aginst the high kickin", waving yer hat in yer hand...on machines the steeper you go uphill the further ya lean over th" handlebars and the more ya pray...(these hopefully humorous comments from someone who"s never really felt comfortable on a horse, to the dismay and good-natured bafflement of my life-long cowboy stepdad, who was never happier than when he was on a favorite horse, out miles from nowhere). Glad you lucked out; try to take it a little easier-we don"t heal up near as fast as we useta.

Loren, you know Allan and his pictures. Don't give him any idears, or he might go out and try to recreate the scene just to take a never before seen snapshot of an ATV going vertical on us. Harley

Actually, I've created a few of those "kodak moments" myself. My son and I used to spend our weekends riding the timber on dirt bikes. My son was always healed up by the next weekend. I usually didn't heal quite that quick.
