Heres what I'm thinking about doing. I'll use a 55 gallion drum and hook it up so I can put compressed air in the drum to spray the stuff out. I have a lot of crown vitch I need to kill etc. My question is how much air preassure is safe to use in a steel drum like that. I'm thinking maybe 20-30 PSI what do you guys think??
Thanks

If you could find a couple of the old soda fountian 5 gal syrup tanks they make great sprayers and easly take a hundred lbs of pressure they are stainless so they are really tough . then you could use your 55 drum to refill them

You can buy a 12v pump at most farm stores for around 69.00 ,a lot safer than having a drum blow up near you .

Thats part of the problem a pump isn't and option I can use. It has to be a bigger spray system that works like the little pump up type you buy at the stores

I said I wouldn't bother you again, but The 12 Volt pumps with builtin relief,(40-60PSI) you can buy will work the same as WHAT I think you are talking about. All you need with them is the Wand which you needed anyway.I'am running 2(25 Gal.and60Gal with 12Volt Pumps)for spot spraying(same as Hand sprayer) or light boom.If this isn't what you are trying to do then I'am lost.

Well my problem is right now if a guy walked up to me and said he would give me a million dolloars if I gave him 10 dollars I would have to barrow 12 dollars. So you see I need to build some thing with the junk I have on hand and not spend any money to do so. I have the stuff to spray and or can get it for little or nothing but I need a way to spray it that is bigger the the 2 gallion sprayer I have on hand. By thew way you would not believe all the junk I have.

OLD...you are too darn important on here to get hurt.
Wish I knew what you are doing last month.
Dad had an old sprayer unit I left back on the farm. It has 2 tanks that mounted on each side of the 450D with the arms, pump and all. It's setting out behind the tobacco barn at a friends place with trees growing up through it.
I may go back up this fall for a visit...If I can get it out you can have it.

That would be nice. I have big problems with crown vitch in my fields and its takeing over and the animals don't eat it well. I'm just tring to figure out how to make a sprayer with out haveing any $$ to do so. With the price of gas etc. I'm just keeping the bills payed and no extra $$ for any thing else. One place I worked for years ago would put some air preassure in 55 gallion drums and that why I asked to see what you guy would think of the idea. Since most have said its a bad idea I'm not going to do it. So now I have to figure out some other way. I just need a spot type sprayer but a bigger one would also work.
Thanks

Pardon the bluntness but that is the STUPIDEST or MOST DANGEREST QUESTIONS I have seen posted yet.TWO(2)lbs.is about the most a Modern day drum will stand. If you want to kill your self fine, but ANYONE around you or someone reading your post and doesn't know better and trys it and gets hurt or killed,THAN THAT IS NOT FINE.Don't even post such THOUGHTS.Like the others have said, buy a 12 volt sprayer or just the pump for your drum.THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE SUCH STUPID REMARKS.Sorry for the rant but your question got to me.

If you think about it you know why I asked the question. I wanted to know if it would or wouldn't be safe to do because I didn't know. Theres only one question that is ever stupid and thats the one that isn't asked. Or did you miss that one when you where in school.

You are right, you don't learn by not asking at times. It was just the thought of something that stupid even being thought. There are people on here that may read that question and NOT catch any of the answers and do it and she blows killing or maiming someone.Apparently You have never seen a tire being mounted(at the pressures you are talking) BLOW UP killing one or several people in the process,so think before asking such dangerous questions.Yes I learned that in school but I was also taught to THINK.

One reason I asked was because when I was working in a factory they would do just what I was asking to drian a drum faster. And yes I know what its like to have a tire blow off a rim becuse I have BTDT more then once. I worked doing tires for a few years and yes I had/saw them blow off more then once and that was both car and big rig tires.

I knew where you were coming from on that reasoning and meant to say it on the other post.what they were doing(We used to too)never really pressurized the drum because you had a OPEN outlet, you were just were replacing the air space faster,we used either a 2lb.or 5lb.reg..I might be wrong but I think OSHA STRONGLY FROWNS now.ALL I can say is PLEASE think of some of these NEWBE'S(more money than smarts) that don't even know what tractor they bought and read a post like that and think HEY I CAN DO THAT AND GO HURT OR KILL THEMSELVES.I Won't bother you any more, but that post set my fuse off.

No way on a common barrel. Beer kegs are made to stand like 30-40 pounds. But like the others say, there are a lot better ways. Those 12 volt pumps work great.

I'm with the others on this. I just bought a new 25 gallon sprayer from MFA with an electric pump, and a good spray wand and only gave $125. I'd get something like I have and not chance it, $125 is not enough money to justify having a big problem the other way.

No agitation.

Steel tank.

Compressed air.

Up & down pressure, poor regulation.

There are just so many bad things with this - it's a real bad idea, even if you don't blow yourself up, it won't work right.

And, way way too much pressure on a thin steel drum.

Just a bad idea all the way around. I wouldn't bother.

old, just my thought, but I don't think I would put 30 lbs of air in a barrel. Think of what a tire with 30 lbs in it does when it blows. Like to read your posts and would hate to see something like that happen. little 15 gal sprayers 12V can be bought for about a c note..... ..Dave

Don't use a tank like that under pressure. Shop used to empty oil barrels with a setup like that. 5 pounds will explode some, and moving it around while pressurized will only make it more unstable. We don't need to be reading about your demise!

Why not just buy a 25 gal sprayer that you hook to a 12 volt battery. Cost probably less than $125.

Hey Old

You are playing with fire and gasoline here. Keep in mind if the tank lets go you may create a superfund site with the spill you make. If it is near your well you are realy asking for trouble.

I have enclosed a site to a sprayer outfit I have dealt with in the past and been happy. Link is to the pages in their catalog that has ready made stuff for just what you want to do. Don't let the prices scare you. Almost all the stuff in their catalog can be had for 60% of list.

why not buy a pump and pump water rather than compressed air. As the air pressure goes down you are going to change your spray volume, sounds very difficult to do, I think you would have a easier time buying a cheap water pump. Also another problem you are gong to have withe the compressed air is that you won't have any tank agitation to mix the chemical, that is very important in spraying. If you really want to make one the best thing to do is to have a tank, I would buy a sprayer tank, but you need a agitation return line and a sucction line and a pressure gauge and regulator, then hose and nozzles. The air pressure works on very small hand held sprayers because it is a small amount of air and you can easily mix the liquid.

The barrel will probably hold that much pressure, but you will have to air it up many times to spray out 55 gals. There is not enough volume in that barrel for more than one or two gals at a time.

Well I figure I'll only fill it maybe half full of the fluid/weed killer and the other half with air which should make it so I don't have to add air as often. I'll also have it on my truck which has a compressor under the hood so airing it back up is no big deal. Pop off on the truck compressor is 150psi by the way

You can put a quick disconnect then a small regulator w/ pressure guage,a small 1/4"pressure release ball valve.....a safety pop off valve (low pressure)....

Now you can hook this up to your truck compresser....with the tank regulator set at a low pressure, say 15#.....
Your truck compresser will keep a constant 15# pressure on your 55 gal tank from full to empty....that will work great....

Another thing that springs to mind, if you ever wanted to use Roundup, a steel tank is not suitable.

Old; Take a lot of care in this project. Maybe use the plastic barrel, get them from coke or pesi distributer for about $5 here. Less chance of sharpnel if it blew. Bob

Bob I also have a plastic barrel but from I have seen either one would be a bad idea. I need a sprayer but don't have the money to even think about buying a pump or factory made sprayer. I may end up useing a water heater tank which I know when made was tested to 300PSI and its also what I have on my truck as a preassure tank but I only let it air up to around 70 psi when I use it. Other then the other day when something happened and it aired up till the pop off popped at 150 PSI I hate it when that happens it scares the_____ out of a person. I thought I had, had a blow out when it popped.

Old,

If you got a lot of stuff laying around then I have to wonder... Got any extra electric fuel pumps? Seems like one or two of these might deliver similar to the the little pump up sprayers.
