My 3500 4x4 dually 4 door 6 speed with 35? or 37? ( sorry don"t remember ratio off hand ) but I get 19-21 mpg empty depending on my right foot and that"s all 2-lane and town driving. Towing a 26 foot gooseneck 15000 to 20000 gross tailer and load it gets 17-19 mpg.

Before you buy that 2002 get the lift pump and the injection pump checked for proper fuel pressure and flow- it is a common problem with that engine from 1998-2002 24 valve engines. A new injection pump is spendy...

Mileage is gonna vary depending on what gears are in your rear, and what kind of transmission...Mine's an 05, 4wd, quad cab, automatic, with 3:73 rear. I'm consistantly getting 18.5 miles per gallon, and my engine isn't quite broken in yet.

Same truck, same experience with me too. Loaded or empty. My 01, same as my 05 truck (except it had extended cab) got near 21mpg. "better technology, less mpg".

As I recall there was an engine Cummins made for awhile that is not real good. I have a 96 that has been great.
I hear the new ones are ok...but with electronics just do not get the fuel mileage the older ones did.If I were thinking of a used one I would give Jim Jessup in Columbus Indiana a call. He used to work for Cummins and still has a shop where he tunes 5.9 engines. He knows his stuff. He was a good friend to my dad before his death a few years ago.
I have put an ATS torque converter in mine. Makes that sucker work. She gets around 24 empty and about 15 pulling a 25 foot float.

Hi Lincoln,
I have a 2000 3/4 ton with long wheel base and 2 wheel drive. Six speed tranny. I get 20.5 on winter mix and 22.5 on summer mix. Like others have said, it does not matter whether I drive in circles around the yard, or down the interstate, it is always about the same. Pulling a 6-7K load, I still get around 15.

Great truck.

A friend has an 02 model with the 6 speed, extra cab, long bed with a topper on it. He gets 18 mpg loaded or empty. Truck really runs and drives great...

Clessie Cummins invented the CUMMINS engine.

If you are going to spend the kind of money it takes to own one of those trucks, you might as well learn how his name is spelled!

Bob, you are the first member of the correct police to comment on this post. Really, what difference does it really make if he can't spell the word correctly. Obviously you never owned a Messerschmidt or a Peugeot. Now, you don't want to be known as Bob the Knob do you?

My 2001 3500 (6-speed 4X4) gets 18 MPG, empty or carrying a small load, regardless of where or how it is driven, does not matter if it is a long highway trip, or just short local trips. Pulling 10,000 lbs cuts it down to 14 or so.

Anywhere from 16-19 or so average on my '01 5 spd, with 4:10's long as I keep the RPM's under 2000 it runs to the high end, over 2000 (a shade over 70 in 5th) drops fast. Worst highway I ever got was at 'absolute max' GCVW and I got 12.

Best I ever got with my "02 automatic is/was interstate unloaded at 18 or maybe 19 MPG on average by that meter thing up in the headliner. Worst on average is working around town at about 13 MPG by that same meter thing. I mostly use (work and highway) my "96 that doesn"t have the fancy meter thing in the headliner and don"t ever calculate it, just try to take it easy under all condditions and keep filling the 35 gallon tank as needed.
