Look around for an old 1960s vintage IH #56 4-row unit. There are still several out there in working condition, they are very simple to work with and on. They can easily be "reduced" from 4 rows to a two-row unit if you need to.

30 Pt.---If you find a reasonably priced pair, let me know--I will take the other one. E-Bay has bunches of them right now--A J.D. #71 planter currently has 10 bids with the high at $355.00--and 7 days left--#130013434458--I have found some fair priced implements close to Milwaukee, but not many--Good Luck--Tim (WI)

Do you know if I can use the JD#71 for planting soybeans and other seeds? If so what type of plates do I need?

You can buy these old IH planters all day long for under $200.

WISFARMER.COM is the website of the Wisconsin State Farmer newspaper. Published every Friday at about noon. Many, many machinery ads and also antique ad section that contains mostly farm machinery. Your main problem will probably be that few people are advertising their corn planters for sale now because the season has passed. If you're in a hurry to find a planter you can publish a "wanted, corn planter, etc." ad. Good luck. Also if I run into anything I will try to let you know although offhand I can't think of anyone that has one for sale. Another place to look is the John Deere "Machine Finder" website.

Check out farm auctions. I got my 2 row JD at one last Spring for $7, and planted with it a couple weeks later. It came with a set of milo plates in it, two sets of corn plates and a soybean set. The round plates for JD were the same for 40 years (maybe more) and are still available. DONT" get them from a JD dealer, though - WAY overpriced! Got a whole bucket of plates (10-12 sets) at a different auction for $1. Linconagproducts(dot)com also has new ones.

What do you have for a tractor, 4 row units are a dime a dozen, 494 JD & other colors.

If you need a 1 or 2 row unit, those actually cost a bit more, popular these days with more folks wanting to put in food plots.
