I've had this problem on a number of occasions. Too darned short! :>(

Oh well, guess I'll have to do like I always do and just make it work with what I've got. :>)

We've got a 36' diameter grain bin on a rented farm we had that problem with with a 60' long auger. With a 60' auger we had to back it up on blocks and then use a piece of steel barn siding for a chute to get the grain to top of the bin. After two years of doing that we bought a 10"x70' auger that easily reaches that bin but it's long enough it can be a pain to move between bin sites.

If I remember the advert in the paper, Farm King"s 16inch x 91ft auger takes 175pto hp to run it, ah well it will give the 4wd something to do in the summer!

Not trying to sound dumb but;
Will one of you help educate a southern boy.

All of the grain storage bins I have ever used were the 4 compartment type where you had to climb on top to move the built in shoot to the compartment you wanted to load.

SO with this bin pictured..... ..... ..... .
It is a single compartment? Right
Is'int that a hole pictured right where the auger end is?
Why would you need to load in the top center? Or if this lower hole is not for loading through what is it for? People Access?
Why would the lower access hole not work?

I am thinking loading through the center would center the grain and cause wall pressure to be equal on all sides but just wanted to ask because it is not a factor in our bins. One conpartment can be full while the others are empty and still not cause wall damage.

Filling a steel bin off-center with a light crop like oats would not be a problem. Doing that with heavy wheat would likely mangle the bin.

You must have been away from these augers too long! That handle attatched to the winch thingy will make her taller. I know it requires manual labor but cheaper than buying a new auger. Course if the crop is that small just drop it in that man hole or even in that side wall door! Hope it turns out well.

You realy think it will be a problem? You could just scoop that half-load through the door. Oh, that it would rain one of these years. I am trying to salvage my feed crop but I wonder if it is worth running over the ground?

Is that run with hydraulic orbit motor? How does it work for you?

We have an 8" by 51' PTO drive auger (the one that I lost my foot in), a 7" Brandt with a 13 horse Honda and an old galvanized Mayrath with an 11 horse Honda on it. Only hydraulic drive thing would be the drag auger, which works OK, but I prefer the grain vac!

Safety lesson Re: Same Old Problem in reply to Steven@AZ, 08-05-2006 12:27:09
Steven

Could you take a moment and present a safety lesson from someone who has had the experience. It would be worthwhile if it even saved/prevented one incident somehwere, sometime. Some will never listen but there will likely be some owner/operators who will. Some guards/screens replaced, some risky tasks changed/eliminated and a few throughts to think about.

See above. Added some vehicle safety in there too that goes with our family's experiences.

BIG auger in reply to Steven@AZ, 08-05-2006 12:27:09
I was noticing the other day one of the Canaduckian short-line companies is now marketing a 16" auger, I think one model was 90' long... that would hold all of Allan's oats inside the tube and screw, before it ever started coming out the top!

Funny story relating to BIG augers...

Neighbor always used his old H to run the grain auger - nice and efficient, ya know? So he upgrades to a 12" x 75' with the swing-out to go under a semi-trailer. Fires up the H, full throttle and starts augering wheat. Auger gets about 3/4 full and kills the tractor! Had to put his 1086 on it then.

I wonder how many HP it takes to run that 16-incher?

I have a 10 X 70 Feterl, and it makes my 40 HP IH 424 SNORT without being loaded NEARLY full.

A Deere 4020 running it over the course of a few days' harvest uses a noticeable amount of fuel!

My 13X61 Westfield swing auger will put a full load on my 4020 when feeding it to capacity in wheat. It will also load/unload a 950 bu semi in under 10 min. A 16 inch at full capacity ? I bet around 150 hp.

BTW Bob,did you get that 261 chev from the guy north of Goodrich ?

Think that bin will hold the whole crop??

One thing I don't miss is cutting oats in July/August.

We had .55" of rain here this morning about 7:30, it cut back on attendance at a fly in at our AirPort.

Hey Sloroll, we had P51D Big Beautiful Doll come over from Atlantic, love the sound of that Merlin Engine!
