I had a friend tell me that if he had my land, and equipment, he would clear off about 10 acres and plant it in Walnut trees. He said that in about 20yrs. I could retire off the tree harvest.
Any thoughts on this plan?
We have alot of Pine Tree Farms around but not Hardwood.

Black walnut, and english walnut for that matter are very slow growing woods. Ten years will hardly get them established, 30 to 50 might get you some usable lumber.

if you do it because you love trees and like a lot of hard work, go for it

deer and trespassers on 4 wheelers will break your heat

I have an aunt and uncle that have 40 acres in the upper Pennisula of Michigan. In 1985 they got for free from the Arbor association. 10,000 red pine trees, saplings. They planted all 10,000 of those trees with my cousin (16 yrs. old at that time) sitting on the back of a trailer with a shovel. That was towed by a tractor. Those red pines are now 15 feet tall, it will be 20 more years until harvest time.

Walnut is a little out of style right now- it will come back. Just remember you cant plant walnuts and forget about them and expect good lumber. You need to train and prune!! Plant em thick and weed em out in about 10years so they grow straight!

I planted mine in 1967, still waiting to cut the first one. They probably wont send my Granddaughter to college. Actually Walnut lumber & veneer isn't doing that well right now. In 35 years it may be worthless or worth a fortune. No one knows. Its a gamble>

Yes if every thing went right and you planted them the right way and then had a buyer for them. But if you get real nope theres no way it can/will happen. Back in 202 or so a tornado came this way and knocked down a lot of trees and 25% where walnut and that would have been a 100 plus of them and I did make some good money but no where near enough to live on for more then maybe a year and thats only if I didn't want to buy another tracotr of parts for one

30 very good years, minimum, not twenty. "Very good" means plenty of water, no diseases, no bugs, good soil and nutrients. The longer you wait, the more rapid the growth.

It's certainly worth trying.
