Diesel fuel additive

I hear people talk about using ATF in Diesel fuel to improve the lubicity. I was wondering about using non-detergent motor oil, turbine drip oil, or a hydraulic fluid like ISO 32. Would there be any benefit to using them or would they create any problems? Thanks

Hi Ron,

That's not why they use it. Diesel doesn't need any lube, heck it is oil anyway.

The dextron ATF is VERY high in detergent and for some silly reason, it is like magic for cleaning injectors.

The new diesel fuel absolutely does need something added if you are going to use it in an older engine. With little sulfer in the fuel any older injection pump won"t last long without added lubricity. Just use soy diesel.

Mike soydiesel isn't the answer either. I work for the Nebraska Dept. of Roads and all we run is soydiesel and we add a additive from Shaffer Products to help lubricate the fuel system. A couple of trucks insist on it(additive) or they start missing(electonic injectors) and had several inline pumps with excessive scoring. Diesel repair shop blames the soydiesel. Caterpillar won't warranty fuel problems caused by soydiesel either. chris

Why is lubicity and issue? It sounds like a search for a problem and a solution. Clean Fuel and no water = No problems. Dumping a can of "wonder glop" in the fuel tank or oil system is like taking food supliments/vitamins and expecting to turn into Mr Universe while watching TV.

On an older diesel probably won't hurt but probably wouldn't help much eiter. On a newer diesel such as the High pressure common rail injected Cummins in my Dodge pick-up, DO NOT dump anything in there except a good reputable diesel fuel addidtive/treatment. These newer engine's with their extremely high fuel pressure's(20,000psi plus)will not take kindly to ATF or the like. Save the ATF for automatic transmissions and use what is recomended for fuel treatment.

Luke,

I'm not much for additives myself, but know several guys who are using a quart of ATF per tankfull of diesel, and swear by it.

Can you cite an official source condemning the use of a small amount of (clean, new) ATF as a lubricity additive in the newer engines?

Yes I can. So happens I am a Dodge and Chevrolet dealer. I know for a fact that Cummins will not warranty a HPCR engine that has had ATF run the through the fuel system. I have learned this from first hand experience.

Let me ask this question. Why would you NOT want to use a factory approved fuel system treatment on a new engine instead of pouring ATF in the tank? These fuel rails on the HPCR Cummins run at almost 24,000psi, an a little higher than that on the Duramax. Would you wnat to risk it on a $12,000 engine? I wouldn't.

email is open if you'd like more info.....

For what it's worth, the ATF will do what people say it will. Clean injectors, etc., BUT what nobody realizes is that the ATF does not burn cleanly or completely. This leaves ASH in the engine. I agree with the above post, use only reputable fuel conditioners. If you'd like proof, pull some oil samples and let a lab test them for you. The contamination will show up.

I used to work as a lubrication consultant and my dad still does. I swear by his company's products and have seen many oil analysis reports to make a believer out of me. I'm not trying to sell anything here, but will offer more info if anyone is interested.

I never had any confidence in the ATF as an additive and thus have no experience with it. But it will dye the fuel red, which will cause BIG problems if the DOT samples your fuel in a licensed vehicle.
