She calved yesterday, had a good size bull calf. Over night she kept pushin and pushed out her uterus. We got the vet out and me, my dad, and brother all helped the vet and we it back inside her, but she lost quite a bit of blood and her nose was pure white. She was definatley stressed and she died this afternoon.

Such a shame to try so hard to save the poor girl and end up loosin her anyways.

Sorry to hear about your luck! My grandma died 4 years ago July and since then we've had more heifer calves than I can ever remember. They all seem to be black too, just the way Grandma & Grandpa liked them.... Unless of course they're red, then they're almost all white. For a while I think we had atleast 15 heifers in a row, and we only milk about 25-30!!

Easy to pick & choose who to keep and who to sell. We've got the best herd we've had in a while.

Sad to hear you lost your cow. I had a cow have trouble this year to. Lost calf and cow is fair and is going to have to go, she has lost about 25% of her wieght and is walking funny, so we are going to try to put wieght on and sale her. Good life but teaches the hard facts about life too. Best of Luck!! Teddy

Sorry to hear that.

Any idea if she got to feed the calf any first?

Hope the calf takes to the bottle.

Yeah we got one milking out of her the night she calved. Some calves are stupid but they are all atleast bottle fed before we put the bull calfs on the truck.

Lately we"ve been trading bull calves for hay with a guy who raises a few beefers on the hay he can"t sell. The 5 we"ve traded so far are looking pretty good.

If it got the first feeding that is good... it got some colostrum.. that should help it out.. even if it is bottle fed the rest of the time.

Sounds like a good deal on the calf trade.. both of you make out on that.

I remember my cousin's (deceased) husband was a milk truck driver. He has told me stories of pulling into daries where they let the bull calf's die.. anyone who wanted them was free to get them.. either at birth.. or when they threw them on a pile to die... sounds greusome to me..

We also freeze a gallon or 2 once in a while when we get a momma who REALLY milks out, so he got some of that too. I saw him tonight, looks like a perky lil bugger...

I agree, that does sound rather gruesome. We'd atleast raise it for beef or somethin...

yeah, they go into shock and there ain't much help for them. But I've laid out on the frozen ground and snow and pushed them in and had the cow live too. We just keep tryin', that's what we're here for.

There is nothing like having your Carharts stipped down around your waist and your arm all the way up a cow that makes you wonder if maybe there is a better way to make a living.
Losing a cow after a lot of work just bits.
