About twenty years ago I bought a 1946 CJ2A from the original owners son.It is equipted with a drawbar, and rear pto.The son told me his parents used it for their car and tractor when it was new.He said they plowed, disked, pulled cotton trailers, all sorts of farm work with it and drove it to church on Sunday. In later years the son used a pull type bush hog with it.The owners manual is still with it and it has diagrams and instructions for plowing ect.I believe the pto hp rating was about 15.Anyone with experience or knowledge of farming with one's comments would be interesting and welcome.Thank You,Boley

Thanks to all that have posted,I should have said hay wagons rather than cotton trailers. This family lived in Missouri when they bought the jeep and later moved to Texas. The son mentioned earned a PHD in nuclear physics, worked his way thru school working in machine shops where he made a real V-8 tow bar and boat rack for the jeep.He was not the typical bubble head PHD who knew everything about something and nothing about everything else. After he was established as a nuclear scientist and working in that job,he enrolled in night classes at a trade school and painted the jeep for his project. He and his dad had painted it a few times before, thats why it's preserved so well, but he wanted a more professional job on it.He and I both built houses the same year and both ran out of money,he called one night and asked if I still wanted the jeep for $1800,I did and sold my CJ7 for $2500,and bought light fixtures with the difference. It is S/N 19040 with the column shift and semi-floating rear axle,if it had the full-floating axle,I would think it about perfect.Boley

We had a CJ3 w/pto, pulled a Case sickle mower with it. Like the above, had to put a cover over the driveshaft to keep the down hay from winding up on the driveshaft. Had to pull a lot of hay off of that driveshaft before we covered it. Use it to pull a bushhog type mower and had to put a screen on the back to protect the driver from the wooden chunks being thrown up into the jeep. It would just walk with a gang of disc behind it, but when you put that 2 moldboard plow behind it, it knew it was back there. We had to remove the hood to help keep the motor cool when plowing. Sold it and have wished a many a time that I had not done so. The old jeeps were really a "workhorse", not compared to those of today. Would like to see a pulling contest with the old one and the new ones. Now have a '81 model six cylinder motor and it won't pull near as much as the old CJ3, miss that old gal.
Good Luck.....

Charles Sorenson who was Henry Ford's righthand man for 40 years left Ford in 1944 and joined Willys. There is an excellent book about the postwar Jeeps showing their development from the WW2 Willys & GPW, many photographs showing the field trials & development of the CJ-2A taken on Sorrenson's farm. Almost all the jobs that could be done with a tractor could be done (almost) as well with a Jeep. If anyone is interested I will ry to dig out my book (from the 104 boxes of stuff still in store) and pass on the full title of the book.

Cheers david

My uncle had a WWII Jeep built by Ford that we used around the farm. Most of the time it was used for fun but it was great for fixing fence and we would also rake hay with it if the tractors were tied up on other tasks. However, we had to wire up some rain gutters to cover the drive shafts to keep the hay from winding up on them.

But Sunday afternoons we sure had fun with that Jeep. We explored all of the surrounding countryside and hit every farm road and logging road in the area.

My wife has a '53 CJ that's waiting-to-get-done line. It has a power takeoff, belt pulley and snow plow.

I love Jeeps!

Dave2N, they actually made guards for the driveshafts to completely enclose them, they hard to come by now.

My first grade teacher and her husband lived on a farm owned by his mother. They lived in the log cabin, which they modernized built by Nathan Boone. He was Daniel Boones youngest son and he founded Ash Grove, MO. Dick and Lois had a Jeep they used for a tractor mowed hay, raked hay, plowed, then they drove it to work Dick was a type setter at the local weekly paper, and Lois thr first grade teacher. Later he bought a C Farmall and traded the jeep for a ford truck.

Yes they were. You could also get a governor as a factory option. I believe that the Jeep was tested at Nebraska, as was the Dodge Power Wagon pickup, the only pickup tested at Nebraska. The Jeep owners manual had a section on how to plow.

I almost bought one of these a couple years ago, but I had to walk away (wife said no). I already have too many projects & not enough time, so wasn"t worth the fight. This one was built by Topeka Tractor and used by the highway dept with a sickle bar mower attached to the side for keeping the grass beside the road under control. They had some pretty interesting multi-purpose vehicles back then.

I met a guy a couple years back that purchased a mostly restored Empire tractor at an estate sale for $600. He hadn"t seen one before & thought it was a home built of some sort. He found the ID tag and googled it. Turns out it is very rare and worth over $30,000! I added a link to to the Empire tractor club photo"s in this post. Enjoy. Tim

Yep way back when a JEEP was a JEEP they had a lot of stuff made for them. Theres a guy not very far from me that has one with a belly mount sickle mower on it. He will not even think about selling it and it just sits in a car post next to has shop where he sells baskets etc

It is really sad what has happened to Jeep. Back in the day, when I was a kid, a Jeep was a Jeep, a true rugged vehicle, with flathead sixes and farm options, and no luxuries, now it is a glamour toy for college kids and yuppie soccer moms.

Most of the Jeeps I have ever seen when they were a true Jeep had flat head 4 cylinders in them and top speed going down hill was around 45 MPH and that was if you where lucky. But if you could get the tracktion they would climb a tree LOL

Willys Jeeps were 4 cylinder half flathead/half overhead valve- sort of like Indian 4s/pocket valve Harleys/early Rolls Royce. Ford built Jeeps had flathead 4 engines. Early Kaisers had 6 cyl flatheads in pickups, wagons, FC170 similar to Dodge (was told to check for parts interchange). Possible to find some Ford flatheads in some Willys Jeeps as swaps by military contractor/rebuilders, especially if former military surplus from commonwealth army- Ford was larger supplier for lend-lease, Willys production did most of American army supply. I have a 1953 CJ3B, the slightly updated version of the CJ2A with a taller, more powerful engine. Mine has the rear PTO, but they also made a front and mid as well. The sickle bars were mid mount and were powered by the Mid PTO. There were at least two different 3 points available. I may be wrong, but I was thinking that the PTO output was more like 29 HP. I used to pull a trailer type Brush Hog with mine until I got a proper tractor. It was kind of scary at first.
Here's a link to some info and a photo of me mowing with the jeep.
