15 monthe ago I fell backwards off a terrace, landed on a bridge timber, shucked seven ribs off my spine like dry corn off a cob, cracked a half a dozen more. In the ER two doctors told me I was supposed to be dead. Never seen that much damage and have the person live.

Don't mean to complain because I'm grateful to be alive but I did get my masters degree in pain.

I was put on morphine and oxycotin for three months. I was paranoid about addition. Shouldn't have been. If you are not inclined toward addition it won't happen. Stay on the meds the doctor prescribes and don't worry. I didn't (macho me) and payed a heavy price. Stay ahead of the pain. Playing catch-up is much too expensive, pain-wise and emotionaly wise.

15 months later I'm on Celebrex, a great non-narcotic pain killer.

It is essential to reduce pain to a level where you can function 'normally'. Normally is different for everyone. You cannot, cannot, cannot, just give up and sit in your favorite chair for the rest of your life. You must get back into your life as far as you can. The alternative is unacceptable.

Sorry for preaching. I hope this helps.

I slept til midnight, then was awake about once an hour after that. It still hurts like fire but I'm getting stronger and was able to eat a little yesterday. Thanks for thinking of me.

Mr. Cowman;
Glad to hear that you are on the mend. Take it slow, and let time make things better.
Good Luck!

Nebraska, Don't know what surgery you had but I had major back surgery on 19 June. Got home from hospitalon the 24th and things were good until the 29th when all fire broke loose. Pain that I never thought existed. Stayed that way off and on until the 2nd of July then became almost constant. Finaly went to the emergency room on the 4th. Was given two shots of demerall, and another of something else. Told me to disregard directions on pain medicine bottle and take every 4 hours instead of 6, and if necessary take two instead of one. Stay ahead of the pain was how it was explained to me. It worked and within three or four days I was back to one every 4 hours,followed a few days later by one every six hours. It sure made a believer out of me and I have been progressing extremely well according to doctor. HTH. God Bless. Bob Da. (La)

Bob, glad it worked for you but I had to quit the pain meds because the side effects were worse than the cure and they were'nt working anyway. I had a kidney removed so about all the pain I have is at the incision. But yeah I've had back surgery too and that ain't no fun.

My dad had a Knee replaced a couple years ago, they gave him morphine for pain, he was sick for a week after he came home, so pain meds are all they are cracked up to be.

Howard, I feel the same way about those pain meds. Had a hernia repair a few years ago, don't remember what it is was the doc gave me for the pain, but I only took it once and decided that the pain was easier to deal with than the side effects of the meds.
