Question for Allen??? in reply to Allan In NE, 08-30-2006 15:19:39
"Here" wheat after sod is a bad combination. Is this a standard practice out "there"?

Hi John,

No, that wouldn't work; just too darned much competition from the regrowth. This ground will lay and be fallowed for over a year to clean it up before it's ever planted.

What I'm planting to wheat this fall is what I tore up back in March and have been working down all summer long. Got 'er as clean as a new baby's bottom out there and just waitin' fer the seed. :>)

Hi Rick,

Would that be FOB my front yard? Trouble with these bigger tractors is the darned freight on the silly things.

If I remember right, you are located up in the thumb?

Hi Allan; Sure as shootin that is 2 different tractors, before at or just above an idle, after is pumping out the RPMS. Sure would like to have run those furrows. Only thing better than plowing like that is a cup of coffee and a hot apple pie at the end of the field. Then do it again. Thats living. LOL Thanks for the pics-- Bob

Yep, I hear ya.

Hence the name "Cowman". :>)

If I had my druthers, I'd have a pivot out there and be plantin' corn, beans and some of that 7-ton alfalfa like the big guys are always talkin' about.

'Course, the state boys clamped down on that idea real quick. :>(

Your photo reminds me of the stories that my Mother would tell of going to "Lone Tree School", while growing up in western SD. There was a single tree about a mile from the school, that the teacher would take the students to every Spring for a picnic outing.

What are you turning under...buffalo grass?

Yepper,

That was the last of the really nasty stuff.

There's still 10 acres of crested wheat grass out in the pasture that I could til, but so far we've been using it for the cows.

Slow but sure, it is starting to look like a farm. :>)

Just curious Allan --- if you're gonna plant wheat, will it be hard red ?? Here in Ontario, with hard red it is difficult to come up with the proper protein the millers need. By far the majority grown here is soft red and we're just swamped with product (great yield)but very poor prices. The straw is actually more valuable than the grain this year.

Yes Sir,

Hard Red Winter wheat. Enemies out here are drought and hail. Protien levels are usually pretty darned good.
