I just wonder what all these city people with horses, who want to get rid of all the slaughter houses for horses, are going to do with them when they no longer want them. They can't hardly take them to the country and turn them loose like they do their dogs. Just curious, it just seems like they aren't thinking very far ahead because they won't be worth anything. Is the government going to have a place to put them? Graveyard or what? It seems stupid to me.

my wife boards horses. if the people dont pay she sends them a letter and gives them 3 days to either come get the horse or pay her for the unpayed for hay and oats. if they dont come get the horse me or her helper take the horse to the peoples house and ask them where they want the horse. another thing she does is just tells them its her horse now and she is going to sell it in a week.

We have been in the boarding/trainig busines all my life. Right now we've got 40 boarded horses inside the barn, and around 20 of our own and lesson horses living in the pasture. We have never had a lot of trouble getting money out of the people, but we deal with a pretty wealthy clientel. Our inside full care board is $500 a month per horse. We have some people who have as many as 3 or 4 horses inside, the horses are in training, and they take two to three lessons a week at $35 per 50 minute lesson. There is plenty money out there, just have to be in the right area.

Horses are long lived animals, so think of the financial oppurtunities in boarding animals for city folk.

Oh yeah that will work REAL good won't it? When they don't pay the bill you are stuck with a horse that you have got to feed and is worthless. You bet I sure want to jump into that business.

You refer I presume to the proposed amendment to the Horse Protestion Act. This has got to be one of the most underhanded, ill concieved, and long term just plain wrong pieces of legislation to come up in Congress in several years. A the base of this mess are the USPCA and PETA type folks who don't have any problems about telling folks how to live their lives and run their business.
Included in this boondoggle is a budget increase of $ 5 million for the USDA Horse Protection Unit.
This is a complex deal that includes a bunch of stuff besides the prohibition of slaughtering horses for human consumption. In the first place, even though I don't eat horse meat, I believe that the US gov'ment has NO business telling me or you what of our livestock we can and cannot kill and eat, or even sell for forieners to eat.

Sorry, I really didn't mean to sugar coat my opinion.

I could go on all night about this but tell any body who will listen that this ain't no farm bill. These people are trying to make my horses into pets. I've got a black stud horse standing 16.3 hands that would just love to get in their laps.

As I age my tolerance for stupidity shrinks.

"As I age, my tolerance of stupidity shrinks!" I couldn't agree more and I was wondering if you were describing me! There are some things that are so stupid that there is no point in debating them.

As to the horse issue--I agree with you 100% on all counts. First, it's none of the government's business. Second, the boarding issue is a PIA to me. We've had Q horses for 37 years and still have 4. Because we have horses and plenty of pasture and barn space for them, yuppies automatically think that I should "become a boarding facility." Tried it once and didn't like the constant comings and goings and demands to "change this and change that."

Horses are like cars--easy to buy but expensive to keep.

My $.02. Have a good day.
