Putting a little flathead Continental together here, I see where the specs show 35-40 pounds for the rod cap torque value. The bearing shells were not replaced (just rings and valves). Now, when a guy torques those nuts down, you're pretty much tied into the location of the holes lining up on the con rod bolts with the slots in the nuts right? So in other words, you'd have to go another 60 degrees (or 1/6 or a turn) to get to the next cotter pin opportunity and that might be torqued too tight. Can someone explain which way to error on this, is it better to be tight or loose if you run into a decision-making time?

If it is too far to the next slot you can always file a bit off the bottom of the nut. As stated already don"t back up! And forceing to the next slot will stretch the bolt! File slow and square. Try different nuts to bolts till you get to the last couple.

Sometimes if you get any way off I try swapping the nuts around sometimes that gets them closer. And I also go tighter to align them.

NEVER loosen the nut. Carefully tighten it to the next slot.
