brake problem

Driving my old D15 with no brakes finally has caught up with me. The left wheel now locks up (intermittently)and won't release until after I've made a couple of attempts at backing up and starting forward. After about one rotation of the wheel, in either direction, it locks up. I was able to get it back to the barn by using the back/forward technique and the brake seems freed up now but I need to check the condition of the brakes... finally. The wheel has made a squealing, scraping sound off and on as I used it which I chalked up to a brake band dragging. And the brake doesn't release when I try the brake pedal or hand release.

Now, what all do I have to do to get a visual look at the brake before calling the service guy to make a 10-mile trip out? I've used the old tractor for brush-hog work for lots of years with no brakes. So, if there's something I can do to remove the present problem and continue to use the tractor, I'll do that for a while.

Yeah, I know. Driving a tractor with no brakes isn't too smart. But this is Kansas and the pasture is good and level. Plus, the old brush hog makes a good anchor when needed!

I just went through similiar problem with D17 I've been using to move fill. Brake went rather quickly and took drum and all. Parts were around $750 bucks. I had shop lift and such so could do the job myself. Not hard technically, just heavy having to remove axle housing and all. Not familiar with D15; but, think it is very close to 17 and really no way to fully inspect without tearing it apart. Hate to guess what labor would cost for such a job.

It's possible an bearing has failed causing the brake to bind up now.
