Im planning to build a small flat bottom boat to wander the swamps in north florida when i move there. Im looking for a 10-20hp water cooled diesel with F-n-R trans and electric start. doesnt need to be fresh-water cooled..Anyone aware of mass importers that might sell engines like this like Harbor freight sells cheap tools?...Its not that Im cheap..... .Well OK maybe it is....but definitly poor.

You might try contacting some marine salvage yards.Possibly also ship breakers.I believe there are four such places in Brownsville ,Texas.I may have some phone numbers here somewhere.I have no idea where you are for convenience sake. There is also a marine salvage in Hoboken or Jersey City,N. J. The Coast Guard sometimes condemds worn out lifeboats.Old boats used gas engines later models used Listers or Weaterbeke diesels.

Thanks Mark, ive checked the Hardy site before, theyre strickly gen-power now, the westerbeke idea is good, theyre marinized perkins engines if memory serves, I might have to go that route if I cant find new in my price range. I was hoping changya or someone similar made what I was looking for but no luck so far.. I might try to find an old lister with a burnt gen head and buy the gear but Im trying to avoid air cooled so I can keep the noise down.

About twenty years ago, there was a company called "China Diesel" that imported a small marine diesel, complete with transmission. They called it the "Hardy Diesel", and it was quite cheap, relative to comparable domestic engines.

The company is still around, but it looks like they are only selling generator sets these days. However, they would be a good place to start looking; see the link below. Maybe they still import a few marine engines.

Another possibility would be an engine (such as a Westerbeke) salvaged out of a wrecked sailboat. I would think the parts situation would be much better. Westerbeke makes a number of engines in the horsepower range you're looking for, although they're pretty heavy. (Weight in the bottom of a sailboat is desirable, so they don't try to shave weight from these engines.)
