I bought an 861 Ford tractor at a farm auction today (farmer retiring) and I'm pretty excited about it. Based on the serial number (165506), it is a 1962 model. Its in good condition. I know the owner of the tractor (he owned it for 20 years) and his cousin bought it new. The owner used it daily raking hay and odd jobs on a 250 acre tobacco and cattle farm. It was rebuilt about 10 years ago. It doesn't smoke and the oil pressure gauge reads 50 pounds after its warmed up. Except for the the fenders and a brushed-on paint job, the sheet metal is perfect. The fenders have minimal rust but a few dents to fix.

Does anyone know for certain the factory horsepower for this tractor? I've seen many postings in various forums that say 38, 40, 45 or 48 hp, so there seems to be a lot of confusion out there about it.

The tractor does not have Powermaster markings, but is an 861 automatically a Powermaster or not? If not, what is the difference between an 861 and an 861 Powermaster?

I have a 861,which I have had for several years. I use it to plow snow, with a rear blade, and I love it.

I bought a Ford 861 about a year ago and I love the tractor. For what I got and what I do , it is the perfect size. I have always had Farmalls (about 9 of them) and decided to get something smaller , easier to get on and off of. I loved all of my Farmalls , just didn't need something that big. The one I bought was in mint condition, with everything in tact. About 4 months after I bought it , it developed a snall leak from the power steering column and I had to have that fixed .Also it had a filter missing in the reservoir of the power steering unit. It is a nice little tractor but I probably paid too much for it(4750.00)

I forgot to note that I bought the tractor because of the two features, power steering and live PTO.As far as the horsepower rating ,it ranges from the high 30's to the high 40's--don't know--most rate it at 42 HP.HP on the drawbar is different than the HP on the PTO.

Thats an 801 series tractor and yes its a power master. My Neb test list has it right at 45HP. It should also have the 2 stage clutch giveing it live PTO. And it should also be a 5 speed tranny.
