I have about 50 gal. of old diesel fuel. It is in a old tank Dad picked up years ago, I would guess it is 45 years old. I would like to get rid of the tank, but don't know what to do with the fuel. The fuel looks good, but am a little afraid to try and use it. I had a bad experience last year with old gasoline causing sticking valves. How long will diesel fuel last? Then there is the problen on how to get rid of the tank. Any info apprecitatd, Stan

Not sure where you're located at 37 Chief, but here in Illinois, the State EPA office holds hazardous waste collections all across the state. Search on the web, or give them a call.

Even if they don't hold collections where your from, I'm sure they could point you in the right direction. They don't want an old barrel of diesel sitting around anymore than you do.

We drained almost a hundred gals out of an old dragline that had set close to ten yrs, we let the 1st 5-6 gals drain on the ground cause it was all water, then run the rest thru a big funnel with a cpl layers of window screen in it, got prob another gal worth of crap that looked like shredded cigars by the time we were done. but the fuel worked fine in a loader we had. I think the fuel stays fine its just all the crap in it that ya gotta get out

Hi Stan,

I too would filter it then use it in my PSD as long as it was algee free. Just run some fuel thru a coffee filter and if there's a problem you'll see it on the filter paper, black slime.

There's several $10 mfg biocide treatment for 50gal of #2. Any truck stop will carry it as well as a diesel parts house.

As you get down to the last 2 or 3gal then it might get pretty nasty looking depending on how well the tank was taken care of. I would toss that part rather than filter it, if it didn't look clean.

Put a sample in a covered glass jar in the sun for 15nin. You would then see if there was a problem with the fuel. In the sun it should look like amber or gold colored.

I'd use it. cleaning parts, starting fires, You can add up to 10% in your gas tractors. I wouldn't use it in my newer diesels unless I was pretty sure it was clean. No, diesel lasts forever but it does get alge growing in it in the right conditions as soon as 6 months. Filter plugging would be your bigest problem.

Find someone that has a shop that burns used oil and give it to them. It isn't worth the savings if you have injector or pump problems.

This topic comes up with some frequency. A search should turn up lots of opinions. Some say don't use Diesel fuel that is more than a few months old. Others say that burning used motor oil in a Diesel is OK. Opinions from one extreme to the other. Old Diesel fuel? I run it though a filter and then into the fuel tank for the tractor. The FILTER is crucial, in my opinion.

Nope I wouldn't use it in an engine but it does work well for soaking rusty things and also good for starting brush fires. I have a 55 gallion barrel in my shop full of diesel, waste oil and tranny fluid. I soak all sorts of stuff in it and when I get back to them most have freed up well enough to get them working. I also soak posts in it before I put them in the ground or use for fence or skids etc.

Ya Rich, I'm down here about 175 miles southwest of you and I can taste the diesel fuel in my water after a heavy rain from where it is running downhill through the aquifer from your place. Shame on you. Oh wait, maybe that's from the used motor oil that I poured on my trailer deck. Or the used motor oil I poured on the driveway to keep the dust down, or the fuel oil I poured on the tree pile to start it afire. Well maybe it wasn't you, but I got my eye on you anyway. Harley

But Harley you need to check your elavation levels I'll bet you sit up high then I do. The creek I have on the place even runs north instead of south like most so I know I'm sitting way down low in this here valley so it can't be me, so it has to you doing it,.LOL
