Hi Guys,

Bitterly cold, windy day yesterday and yep, that's when it happened, of course. Lost a stock well. Darned thing acts like it might have caved in; sucker rod is stuck tight.

Anyway, had to do some fancy creative "musical chairs" with the cattle, pastures, feeders and their hay, moving things around so that everyone could get a drink.

Spent all morning out in the blistering cold at "Poverty Hill" using that cabbed loader tractor.

Still gotta get some sound deadening material for the inside of the cab, but that is the only way to do chores! Plumb enjoyable, in fact. :>)

Let's see now..... .
Cooler when its hot outside.
Warmer when its cold outside.
Drier when its wet outside.
A comfortable, quiet, windbreaker.
Once a feller gets old enough that he don't have to prove nothin to anybody else..... ...
Allan it ain't a real big consession.
More like good sense.

Sounds like no fun in Allan-ville!lol Our Rural mail man was telling me yesterday that he got up at 3 AM to do the chores before his run, found the tanks froze. Somehow the underground power he ran to the tank heater 25 years ago had failed. Ran a temporary line but faced a permanent fix last night. Good luck, let us know how it turns out. Bob

That must be one mean cold front, it actually blew through here during the night. Lowered our temps a bit too. Now don't get jealous. third party image

Who wants it that warm there anyway. Calling for a high of 35 with chance of snow. Perfect timing for problems such as Allan is having.

I have to go and put 6 round bales in a barn for a guy and then go and pick up a 12ft JD quack ripper. It is 26 deg. now and am trying to wait until it warms to 30 so I can leave one layer off. 8) The joys of helping out friends on their farm while I could be sitting in front of the tv at my house.

I spent some time trying to convince to fiance to move down to Iowa cause it looked like IAGARY could use an extra hand sometimes. She didn't go for it like I was hoping she would. Maybe I can get a hobby place up here in Northeast WI though.

Is there any chance that the drain-back hole is plugged on the thing and it is just frozen up?

Kind of a long-shot, I know.

Thats exactly what came into my mind when I read your post. We had a service call on the same thing yesterday. Warm her up good and see if the rod comes loose. If that works, lift the pipe, Do you have a tractor with a loader?, and check your vent. If that don't do the job, Take a handfull of asprin, and call me.

Okay, here's the deal.

It has been working just fine. Someone, maybe you or Billy had to do some work on the sucker rod not too many years back when Jack had the place.

Anyway, it was working just fine until the cold weather set in. Went out there to chop ice and the motor had burnt the belt off and the sucker rod won't move.

We re-arranged the cows so that they can water at the corral. Gonna worry 'bout this jasper next summer when it warms up a bit. Cows are coming off in a weeks' time anyway, so no use fiddlin' with it now. :>)

Are you sure that the well didn"t freeze? Don"t know how cold you are getting up there, but when we ran windmills in the winter (tried to avoid it) we would either have a weep hole about 10 feet down, or pile straw around the base of the well to keep it from freezing.

I'm most of the way through the book "Mountian Man" from which the movie Jerimiah Johnson was inspired. Whenever I'm tempted to feel sorry for myself I think of what this guy went through even though the story is fiction. Good luck on the well.

Yeah,

The winter soltice always come on too darned fast for me.

I can handle the 105 degrees out in the middle of a wheat field, but the cold and I don't mix.

Oh well, being outside is still far better than ridin' this computer desk. :>)

Allan, I think that is one of the rules of farming and ranching. The water system will be trouble free until the absolute coldest day of the year, and then it just quits.
