Hay is too dry....

Well as stated below under Allans post, I went out to try to bale a little hay. I just spent the last 2 hours trying to get a bale to start...unsucessfully...

The goes in the baler, piles in the middle and won't start spinning, then when more comes in it just kicks it to the front and there you have a fine mess.....

I will have to wait for the humidity to come up and the wind to go down..

I know... making hay in November?

What kind of baler?

I've had this problem occassionally with both NH belt and chain balers. In both cases I drop the PTO speed and ground speed to the point that the baler is pulling the hay in. Also, I had this problem a LOT more in the time I though I wanted a wheel V rake. Not so much for me with a bar rake, seems the rope effect has, at least for me, minimized it.

It is a NH 850, I tried going fast... going slow... slow PTO... etc.... I think I will just wait a couple of hours and try again. The only problem I ever have with this baler is feeding dry grass hay, it just seems to be too slick, and the floor chains just don't want to spin it unless there is just a bit of humidity in the air.

I hear ya, with my 851 I just had to idle into it, with the drive belt as tight as it would go. Most of the time it started.... most of the time. soome as it started spitting back out of the front Id cluth and push the throttle to the wall, normally the core would start. Thats one of the reasons I went to a 650, seems to handle it better.
