Well I was out checking for eggs around noon today and saw a hen out in the barn, she should have been in the chicken pen but wasn't. Well she had 6 chicks with her, we got the chicks and the hen now in a building. So heres the question. Isn't it a little on the late side of the year for chicken to be hatching eggs?? Has any body else been haveing it happen with there chickens?? I also have a goose thats laying eggs which also seems out of place for this time of year.
Thanks
By the way the hen has 6 chicks with her and 3 eggs that haven't hatched yet, she had 8 chicks but 2 died.

I just found 6 chicks that were hatched out on a shelf in a old cupboard out in the barn. I'm not sure who the Mom is. They are doing just fine, in a pen in a corner of a horse stall with a heat lamp, food and water. Good thing I heard them peeping, or I don't believe they would have stood much of our SD weather. Good Luck!

Back when I had my game chickens, I had 2 come off of the nest in January with snow on the ground.Of course in Georgia where snow is not often found, our winter months sometimes do get pretty warm.

I hate to think about counting how many chickens I have around here. Mostly show chickens but a few layers. The old timers will tell you that when the days in the fall get to about the same length as the days in the spring when the chickens are normally laying some birds will have a second spring and lay/hatch a set. I have a light Brahma large fowl hen with 11 chicks running around out there now. They don't grow fast in the fall due to temps and the dew/frost means you need to keep them somewhere dry. Mom will brood them a lot but if they are constantly getting soaked it won't save them. Mostly I stop all production after the end of July. Too much work keeping those late hatches alive. Make sure they have constant food and water and are dry and you may be surprised what a good hen can pull off.

I don't know why they do it, but we have had chickens hatch eggs in jan. my guinney hens hatched their eggs in late september.. way to late for them to live. so if you have a place to keep them in out of the cold, they should be ok. animals can be funny some times.. Tim Shultz

We put them in one of our chicken houses, and set it up so the chicks can't get out. Also have a light about a foot off the floor. Of course the ehn is in there also. Have the door closed right now in hopes she will then learn to stay with the chicks but I will have to open the door later to day to let the other chickens in
