i was looking at a chevy 3500 single rear wheel regular cab. its loaded and has 150k miles. 6.5 turbo diesel and auto tranny. the price is $6000 witch is a bit higher than the blue book value but its a really nice truck. its from a dealer but it was the owner of the car dealers personal truck that he said used to pull his boat around and did an excellent job.
so you guys think its worth pickin up?

Son bought a 94 k3500 4x4 5speed early this summer. You may have seen some of our posts. It's a really sharp truck with 160k for $2750. Only chatch was the dealer put a new GM pump on and couldn't get it running without tons of white smoke so he sold it as non running. Was supposed to be a learning experience for him. Almost more than either of us could handle. Less than $1000 later,it runs pretty good except for a little smoke when cold. Some people swear by them and some at them. I really like driving this one. Plenty of power, may blow up tomorrow though.

Run D17Man run.I had a 97 6.5 that was junk.Glad I learn easily, won't do that again!Get a Power stroke or a Cummins or a newer Chevrolet with the Duramax.I loved the truck dearly but could have done without the boat anchor. You know,I can't believe GM actually put them in production.

I have a 1994 1/2 ton with the 6.5 diesel, with almost 200,000 miles, and I LOVE it. It's been good to me.

Remember, this is in a light pickup, and I don't tow much with it.

However, one of the biggest downfalls of this engine, in a heavy pickup, or used for towing, is the lack of an intercooler. This results in cooling problems, cracked heads, and the 'puter backing off on the fuel rate during heavy pulling. In later years, they increased the coolant flow to try to compensate, but that was still no substitute for intercooling.

That being said, an injection pump, installed at a dealer, can push close to $2000.00, and the engines are plagued with a number of problems, including broken cranks and cracked blocks. If the engine should fail, a new or rebuilt "long block" will cost you $5000 to $7000, plus installation, and other parts.

In other words, if you buy this vehicle, and have any major engine problems, the cost of repairs will exceed the value of the vehicle, which I think has been inflated by about $3000.00.

I hate to discourage you, 'cause I REALLY like mine, for what it is, a light pickup, but I think you would be taking a BIG chance to buy that heavy truck, for a premium price.

If you can get the truck at a considerably better price, and are willing to learn how to improve some of it's "quirks", and do your own repairs, you may be getting a WONDERFUL vehicle.

TheDieselPage.com is a GREAT reference. Some parts of the site are free, and some require a subscription, which is WELL WORTH the cost, in what you will save, doing repairs yourself, or being an "informed consumer" if you have a shop work on it.

Good Luck!

I have a 6.5 diesel in my 94 truck. IT IS A GREAT ENGINE. The injection pump is not the problem. It is the PMD, the little black box on the side of the pump. After a while they wear out because of heat. If you take it and mount it in a cooler spot on the truck you will have no problems with it. It ticks me off when people put down the 6.5 when it is one of the best diesels ever made. I used an old air cooled cylinder head to mount on my PMD to prevent it from getting hot, since I have had no trouble with it.

I have a 93 Chev 2500HD extended cab with 170K miles on it. It has the 6.5L turbo and 4L80E transmission, OD ratio .75. In coldest weather it will start much quicker than my 02 Duramax or 82 with 6.2L. Only time it let me down was on a July 4 weekend, pulling my camper, 350 miles from home, the motion sensors failed in the tranny and all I had was low gear. I have too many trucks and I would like to sell it for $5,000 but the book only shows $3,800.

Where do you live? And is the truck a 4x4, long box? What do you get for mileage?
I have an 82 1ton with 6.2, reg cab(not enough room for 3 kids & only 2wd), and 92 3/4hd ext.cab, long box, 4x4, 350 auto(prefer diesel) as good trucks, plus others

1994 was the first year for the eletronic fuel injector pump on the 6.5L diesel. THEY HAD BIG PROBLEMS. Find out if the injector pump has ever been replaced. Bob with M (certified GM tech no longer working on them.)

Well in order to get the high dollar it has to have excellant finish and interior engine compartment etc. Also has to have good rubber and need nothing.
at same time that amount will not even let you drive off in a F350 powerstroke.
