I have a friend that has an old two "bottom or disk blade" disk plow out in his woods that he didn't even know he had until this hunting season. They got the property from his grandparents after they passed awawy. Gramp used to run a allis chalmers dealer and has a woods loaded with stuff they used to dump out there. I was wondering how rare this plow is. I think it is for a ford tractor with a 3 point hookup. I told him I thought it was pretty rare as I have only seen 1 of them. A guy always has one hooked up to a restored ford Jubilee at the oakley tractor show every year in michigan. Are these more common than I think they are? I told him we should drag it out of there and fix it up. Actually they may use it to plow up some deer plots. Anybody got one? Basically a two bottom disk plow. Disks are about the size of a little kids saucer sled. Maybe 30 inches in diameter. Thanks.

Neighbor had one like the one pictured below when I was a child in Southern California. I have a Massey Ferguson three bottom disk plow that you can switch directions with, a model 56 I think.

They're not too uncommon. Both Ford and Ferguson made them.
I saw a couple of them go on ebay this year.
I was told they were used in stony, rooty soil that would cause a moldboard plow to get hung up.
These will jump up and over the obstacle and keep on rolling.
I don't think they will dig as deep as a moldboard plow will. A moldboard plow will kind of knife itself into the ground if it is set right. They set up easy though. I have one - a Dearborn 10-80.
I used it this fall to turn over a plot for a friend of mine. Kind of got me mad though as it sits real close behind the tractor and when I raised it it swung over and bent my fender.

I have seen a couple of them sell for about $250.
Saw one at an auction about 3 years ago that went for over $600. Two bidders that just HAD to have it.

That pic of the N with the 2-disk plow brings back old memories...

I have a jd 3 bottom disc plow that came from Tennessee. It is not 3 pt, but pull type. I hear these were most popular in clay and rocky soils.

When I was a kid in the 40's and 50's disc plows were about all you saw around Springfield ,Mo. in the rocky areas. Forty miles west in the row crop country they used bottom plows. We had one for a Super A, A 151 two disc and one for the H, HM 150 three disc. The HM150 is at my Uncles place in the dead machinery yard. I have a 2 point 3 disc. I have many hrs setting in the tractor seat pulling one.

I am not positive but I think it did. It was in the woods lying on its side and it was so heavy that the two of us could not stand it upright. It was kind of half buried in leaves and stuff. I was going to wait till spring or summer to help him rustle it out of there. Very wet right now back there. It has been there so long it has 6 inch trees growing around it. I am guessing at least 20-30 years. It does look to be in excellent condition though.

Sounds like a Dearborn.. Folks here called them a Durbun 2 Disk Tiller.. Every small farm with a Ford or Ferguson had one. My Dad had one for his 8N, he used it to plow terraces for the Soil Conservation in the late 1940's.. As a kid, I spent many hours plowing our fields with the 8N & that plow. I think the reason that they were popular here was a factor of sticky red clay soils and low horsepower tractors. Bottom plows were never popular here, red clay does not scour well..

I have a two bottom that was bought new with a 40t John deere. It had some advantages. Would cut roots and keep going. And would go in the ground in the hard west tenn clay hills. In turfy ground it would turn the ground in pretty rough chunks. Worked better in loose dirt. I also wondered how rare or the worth of one>

Local Ford tractor dealer here sold quite a few of them in this part of Ga. Made by Dearborn implement,a division of Ford. They worked well in the loose soils around here and were faster than the bottom plows.

I am surprised they work good in loose soils. I would have thought they would be for tough soils.
Learn something everyday.

davpal,
I think they are pretty rare here in Mi. I have only seen on at an auction and 1 or 2 at shows. I think they might be a little more common in other parts on the country.
