Hi Fellas. I've finally moved back to the country and bought an acreage. Now I need a good all-purpose tractor. I've got a hand start JD B, a Farmall B, and an H. I'm looking for something to use a little more than I use these tractors. Duties will include running a 5 foot bush-hog, blading snow and moving a round bale or two. I've got a line on a narrow front JD 4020 gas. I know that these gas tractors can be pretty thirsty, but it's not going to see many hours, so I'm not worried about it. I want something with a good three point hitch and power steering, would this make a good tractor?
Thanks
DJL

The 4020 is one of the all time greatest tractors. I have a gas model and love it for what I do. Put a loader on it and use it for odd jobs and snow removal. The colder it gets the better it starts. Don"t run it very much. It can and will handle the big jobs when needed, but the gas comsumption really goes up too ! Only you can judge if a gas is for you or if a diesel would be better ? If you get a good buy on either one you won"t loose and may even make some money on it if you don"t like it.

You might be better off with a Ford 5000 or so, there a smaller and will be well suited for what your wanting to do. Unless you really want a bign' :)

I like my 3020 alot better for a chore tractor. They are a little shorter and not quite so akward for things like moving snow and mowing. Still way too much tractor for a 5 foot bush hog. Not sure if you can hook onto CAT 1 3 point implements with a 4020. With a 3020 you can use CAT 1 and CAT 2 implements. For the price 4020s are bringing these days you may be able to get into a newer, smaller tractor that better fits your needs.

The 4020 takes category 1 implements just fine. You need sleeves for the lower pins, a 2" ball with a 3/4" hole for the upper pin, and you have to change the position of the sway blocks. I do it regularly. There's a category 1 three point platform on my 4020 right now, that holds my sprayer.

On the Deere area of this site there are many entires on what to watch for and tune on a 4020 in order to get respectable fuel consumption.

A five foot bush hog on a 4020? Get a bale mover that fits on the three point as well as on a loader. I have one that will also serve as pallet forks. It's doubtful that any of the equipment you have for your other tractors will be very useful. The 4020 is in a completely different league.

This tractor is around 96 hp. It will do a lot. It is a pretty large tractor. Also if you have never had a narrow front be careful till you are use to it. I worked for a man that had a 4020 gas and you are correct when you say it uses alot of fuel. You can pull a 12-15 ft bush hog. We use to pull a 2 row silage chopper. So it maybe relly more than you need. I will say they are one of the best JD's ever made. I love em. Good luck

JD4020? Yes, compared to your others it will have a 3pt, be able to haul big round bales, handle large plow. Bush hog - pull type- could be handled by H, but live PTO is easier to work with on 4020. You would have twice the power of H also. How big is acreage- 4020 could handle 40 acres crop or hay ground by itself in Wisconsin/Iowa as weekend/night worker. RN

Well, he may not be so far off. I went to the Deere dealer where I do most of my business and said I wanted a rotary mower that would match up to my 4020 diesel well, and one that would actually cut brush, not just weeds. They said go with a model 609, which I did. I put 3" diameter stuff through it, but it is ALL that 4020 wants. So I guess it depends on what he is doing. Cutting brush, or clipping weeds.

he might have, mark; which it would be a GREAT tractor for a 5 foot mower (or 6 foot). However, i wasn't aware that they made a 2040 GAS!

Las Vegas,

I don't know whether they made a 2040 in gas or not ....but a 2040 sure sounds a lot more plausible than a 4020!
