I have a "88 Chevy K2500 4x4 pickup. Can I replace the rear end with a rear from a C3500 2x4 of the same year? Or does the gearing have to be equal to the 3/4 ton"s?

I beleive the K2500 will have 6 holes in wheel and the C3500 will have 8.

Only true if the 2500 is a light duty 3/4 ton, not too common. If heavy duty then it will have 8 lug axles.

Yes Sir,

Depends on the rear end.

The 8 1/2" semi float takes the 6-lug axle and the full-floating 10" takes the 8-lug axle.

There are also some oddballs with the 9.5" rear - 14 bolt with SF axles and 8 lugs. I've got an 89 GMC 4WD truck sitting here with that setup in 3.73 ratio. Seems GM was a little inconsistent with their use of body styles, axles, etc. during the years when they were making the old body stlyes at the same time as the new - 1988 on to 91. I've seen the 2500s for 88 and 89 with the 10.5" full floating axles as well as the 9.5" semi-floating - both with 8 lug.

Oh Boy!

Tell me about it. That was a joy trying to keep all the changes straight in yer head when you went to the parts window.

The 1/2 tons were first to change over in what? '87? The one-tons and the suburbans were the last in '91.

Gear ratio has to be the same. So if say you now have 4:11s in it then you have to put 4:11s back in or the front drive will fight the rear drive and cause MAJOR problems. So to answer that yes you can if you use the same gear ratio but only if you use the same. Or you can put both front and rear in from the heavy truck
