In summer 1955 Uncle Albert, age 57 and I age 15 would regularly bale and load 1000 bales a day with a NH baler, which must have been a predecessor to the one in photo. We did not have a thingie to kick the bales in the air but the shoot was set so that they came out of the baler two bales high and we went up from there. Loads always had some bales in the middle of rack that were 7 high. Loads had 113-115 bales and we blew out a lot of old car tires. We traded off on each load driving tractor and loading. This physical stuff made football easy in the fall.

YEA thats when you learn how to just guide them a little [when theys is in the ayer!] I remember back in the mid 60s when Clarence Bond next doors got a bailer with a hydraulic thrower on it. My dad and I would watch and think it was really neat to see that bale sail clean over the top of the wagon's rear! He hooked it to his John Deere and the pressure needed to be "adjusted" just a little. Looked like a B17 went down the field! Jeffcat

Just when you think you've seen about everything there is to see, a picture like that comes along. I'm not being crtical, mind you, it's just that when I first saw the three guys on the wagon I said, "hmmm, they must have plenty of help on that farm", and then I realized there was a thrower on the baler. I'm making a copy to show the neighbors because I know no one around here has seen anything like that. Well, all the more power to them.

I was about to say the same thing. We hauled on trucks. One person on the truck and two groundmen. Didn't get two on the truck until we were topping the load.

That's the way we did it a long time ago also ( late '60's ) , a couple or three on the ground and one on top . Someone from the ground had to also drive the truck , a 47 IH 5 ton flatbed with a slant six and a caved in roof from all the bales that had fallen on it . That was near Columbus GA on my Gramdparents farm , them's some good memories ! A big watermelon feast at the end of the season with everybody , Sigh. ...Randy

You bet green grass is just about 120 days away.

Is there a bale thrower on that baler?

I didn't know you could run the bales up the chute without using the thrower if it had one.

I guess I learned something new today.
