Hmmmmm ,

Well, in my spare time today I threaded the hoses up thru the uprights on this old cab, wired up the high pressure switch and installed that labor intensive condenser.

Hooked up both lines from the old receiver/dryer to both the condenser and expansion valve. Figured heck, might as well put the lid with the "farmer rigged fan setup" on and be done with it.

Wrong. This just ain't a gonna work. Won't fit, no way.

Shucks, I'll just call CaseIH and get some new clamps, motors and fans. Yeah right, another $500? I don't think so.

Called the salvage yard and they put acouple of used units on the UPS.

Shoulda yanked that danged cab off and went open-air, I'm a thinkin'. :>(

Yell you had yanked the cab off then this summer would have cost alot more to go out spur of moment and bought a air equiped tractor??.besides that no tell"n" how many water jugs you would melt down. smashed!! cause of lack of water.Burn lots of fuel riding around looking for cool spots.

this job may be cheap.

Have a Good"N"

On top of that, CaseIh wanted $372 for two of these little 10” mounting rings. Told him to forget it and that he needed to move his decimal over a couple of notches.

Those John Deeres are lookin' better and better all the time. :>(

Deere may have a more reliable parts network and whatnot, but don"t think for a minute that if your ring thingy there was painted dandy Deere green it wouldn"t be half again as much...

I ordered a wiring harness for some electrical work on a green 6620 combine merely to use as a model to make a new one, and for 10 feet of double strand wire and some connectors was nearly $100.00. Made one with plastic looming and everything for less than $20.00 and sent the Deere harness back. Go figure...

I have looked at the two on the 4166 and it's hard to believe they would cost that much. Over the years the dealer's have shocked me enough that I expect to pay exorbitant prices. But that is still over the top, although if the decimal would have been moved one place and then doubled it would be about what I expected. Did buy one new motor, at $90! Swallowed pretty hard when I bought it.

The motors now are $135 and the fan blades are $35.

Too rich for my blood; I'll chance the used stuff.

I bought mine last year, that increase is horrible. In the past a person could save a decent chunk of change by doing it himself, now the dealer/OEM pricing is so bad that you have got to spend half your life calling salvage yards to make the repair costs remotely reasonable. I guess this is why I see so many older tractors held together with baling wire and chewing gum. The OEM's are expecting at least 20% return on assets and they don't give a damn who's hide is lost in the process. How many of us outside of a risky hedge fund, can come close to performing this 20% miracle? It just kills a lot of the satisfaction in restoring something when one realizes the amount spent.
