I have a chance to buy two different tractors for my daughter to use on her small piece of land, and I am looking for advice on which one to buy. I will be buying one of these tractors sight unseen because I currently live in New Mexico, and the tractors are in central Missouri. Here is a description of both:

8n ford with a 5' bush hog, and blade. I asked the dealer if he has checked out this tractor and he said.. "nope, and I'm not going to, it runs, and the lift works, and the breaks work, backed up, and drove it off the trailer and parked it" The next day I asked him if it had anti-freeze in it and he said.. "I guess it does" the price on this tractor with the attachments is $2750

the other tractor:

Oliver 1600 with a end loader, and this dealer said: "has good tires, hit the button and she starts right up, everything works and I think i got a used brush hog for ya too". Very nice guy sounds like he is around 90 years old. The price on this tractor is $2500 and the used brush hog is going to be.. "around $250"

I see a lot of information on the 8n, but hardly nothing on the oliver 1600. All advice will be greatly taken on this.

Thank you

With everything it sounds like, stay away from a row crop type of tractor of any make (That Oliver is a row crop) even if it has a wide front axle. Too danderous for a novice. Get a Utility type (The Ford is one) but get one with live PTO and hydrolics and power steering and be sure the lift and BRAKES work. A few year ago I had to pull the neighbors Ford (860) out of his pond (could just see the top of the loader above the water) and several year ago at a trailer park the owner was using a Ford 700 row crop (Narrow front) tractor maintaining around the gravel pit the park is built around and rolled the tractor into the pit and died under the tractor. If it had been the utility model he might never have rolled the tractor so get a low wide front tractor and make sure everything works to be safe.

Buy a tractor with live power and if possible ,power steering. I've been through all that and and finally wound up with a 860 Ford that has both and love it. Live power is more important to me than the power steering. You can buy an 860 if you watch as cheap as you can buy an 8N for and it's twice the tractor. Be patient, don't be like me.

I would like to thank everyone for their quick response to my question.. My daughter and I have talked it over, and decided to wait until she gets there in the spring. If anyone lives around Cabool Missouri and has something for sale, please email me let me know. I am going to need a post hole auger, a brush hog, and blade also. Thanks again.

Chuck

Do as Rusty Farmall says,DON'T buy any thing sight unseen unless you know the person very-very well and can strangle him if he lies to you.Just my opinion buy only something you can get parts or service for JD,IHC,Ford,Anything that Agco bought or owns you will not get any help on.Period, On the Fords,I wouldn't think older than NAA or Numbered series.

There is a small Oliver for sale here in Muleshoe. I think it is a 55. Looks to be in good shape. If you think you may be interested I can take a picture of it and get the guy's phone number. I believe he is asking $1500.00 for it. Price may be different. Email me if you want me to check into it for you.

Never buy any tractor sight unseen. Especially when you do not personally know the seller. Never.

Chuck,
I had a 1600 and have an 8N right now. These two are like comparing apples and watermelons. If the Oliver is in decent shape with a loader it sounds like a steal. I wish I still had mine. The only thing about the Oliver is the size of the tractor..it's huge compared to the Ford. If size doesn't pose a problem go for the 1600 if you are set on choosing one of the two, however, there are probably better choices as others have stated if you don't limit yourself to these. jim

A few things. I agree about the 8N and the dealer, if someone won't answer your questions especially ones like anti freeze with a decent informed answer back away quickly as that sounds real shady ( been on the recieving end..)

You didn't say if the Oliver was a gas or diesel but at that price I will assume a gas. If it were for my daughter I would make sure it had a wide front end, especially with a loader on it. Also check for any major leaks as some Oliver parts can be a pain to get, condition of tires as those can be expensive if you have to replace them, condition of the connecting points in the steering, front end, etc.

I know from experience a good deal can turn into a money pit ( got a 1800 in the shed right now to prove it) If the guy with the 1600 is sure of the tractor get him to send you some pictures of it from all angles and look at the close for any weld breaks or things like that.

All that being said between the 2 I would go for the Oliver hands down unless we're talking about 3-4 acres here and you want to use a finishing mower. I wouldn't get a 8n anyway but like someone else said get into the 600-800 series. Independent PTO is the major thing you wan't to look for in a small tractor as it is alot safer and more so for someone who hasn't been around tractors alot. The Oliver should have power steering, independent PTO, good hydraulics, and 3 point.

Howdy,

Well, before offering any suggestions on tractors I think some questions need to be asked. First off, don't limit your options to just these two tractors. Like others have said, look around. I would also make the same suggestion that buying from a dealer in a situation like this isn't a good idea. I work for a CaseIH dealer here in Ohio and know why tractors that are not worth a lot get advertised for high prices. Often times salesmen get backed into a corner on deals where a guy wants to buy a new tractor and wants to trade in a tractor that isn't worth a bunch. In order to make the deal the salesguy will have to put more money in a trade than he wants and in order to not lose money he has to sell it at a cost higher than it's actual worth. Now that's not always the case since I got a good deal on my last tractor. But then again, I work here and I bugged our salesman on it from the day he said he might take it in on trade.

Now the questions. How big is the piece of property that your daughter is going to be working on? What type of work is she planning on doing with the tractor? What type of terrain does the property consist of? Is the budget restricted to $3000 or less or can it be pushed up any? Lastly, how able-bodied is your daughter? Can she climb with ease or would a shorter tractor be handier? Would she prefer something with power steering? Answering these questions will give everyone a better idea of the tractor you need. Again, don't limit yourself as this is a major purchase. God bless.

Keep looking. There are thousands of used tractors for sale. The Ford is a much handier size for a small farm and small people. But, there are much better Fords than the N series. If you think N's don't have problems galore just read the N forum entries. NAA (jubilee) is much better and the cream of the fords are to be found in the 600/800 and thousand series. Ford built so many of them it defies counting. They'll still be running a hundred years from now. You need the three point hitch, Fords have it.

I bought a Farmall cub from a dealer, the guy sold me a barely running tractor, he was a real horses a$$. The guy with the 8N is a horses a$$ too. If the 8N was a good machine he would be saying, "Its a great tractor, runs great, looks super, etc." The 8N guy sounds like he doesnt care about your $2,700 investment. Buy the Oliver.

The 8N dealers a horse's butt, and thats the kind of service your going to get after the sale - He must be really well off to drive buyers away by being a jerk. I'd buy the Oliver, frontend loaders sure beat a wheelbarrow.

I would tell the guy with the 8n to cram it up his cramhole. What a jerk. Go over and try the oliver out and have your daughter drive it and see if she likes it. If she doesn't you can still look at tons of other tractors out there for sale. 8n is a very handy small farm tractor but I wouldn't buy one from somebody like that. Good luck.

Hands down it would be the Oliver 1600 it has live PTO and hyds plus its just plain a better all around tractor then an 8N. The 8N is just a big lawn tractor compared to the Oliver. Biggest problem with the Olive is that it sits a lot higher then the 8N. The 8N is around 23HP and the Oliver is more then twice the tractor at around 56HP

Daughter? Oliver probably has power steering? 8N is a toy compared to the 1600.A no brainer unless the Oliver is in really bad shape.

Chuck the price is in the ballpark on the 8N but if the dealer is a jerk I wouldn't help make him any richer. I don't know enough about the Oliver you give advice.
Check the photo ads to see what may be near her.

The 1600 is a lot more tractor than the 8n. Should have live hydraulics and power steering? maybe live PTO. the loader is a plus. However it is bigger and harder to get around in tight places. From physical description the 1600 sounds like the better buy.

The Oliver 1600 would be my choice, I have had both, hands down, the Oliver. The Oliver has power steering, live hydraulics, live pto (Power Take Off), the 8N has none of this. The Oliver is twice the tractor of an 8N.
.
Down side of the Oliver is it most likely a Narrow Front Tractor, and caution must be used on hillsides, also has a higher center of gravity, more prone to roll over. But, both tractors can, and will, roll over.
.
I still would go with the Oliver.
