What is that packing stuff around the fuel mixture needle valve? Mine is leaking gas now.

Anyplace that sales plumbing supplies will have the valve packing string. For that application you can unwind one of the braids. This packing material is impregnated with graphite and will not wear on the valve shaft.

This comment is a bit off the topic but:If you do not think string is abrasive take a piece of nylon string and saw it back and forth across a piece of PVC pipe. We use to cut PVC with nylon string in crowed conditions or in muddy ditches by taking a piece of nylon string and using a couple of wooden dowel sticks for handles, wrapping the string 1/2 way around the pipe and sawing away.

It's called the packing gland. I think the cost is about $2.00 from your case-IH dealer. I've tried improvising with different materials, but have never been successful with anything but the original replacement. You might try tightening the packing nut a little.

bearing supplier like motion industries (formerly berry bearing can get packing. also try a farm supplier, farm and fleet, big R's, or napa. in a pinch i have used teflon tape, back out the packing nut, kinda roll it into strings and wind it around, then tighten up the packing nut. you can be tricky and use the yellow teflon tape for gas pipes too.

Piece of cotton string. Dad always used the string out of his country gentleman tobacco sack.
