After reading Maurice Skoch's post I thought I'd post this . I have a Monitor windmill laying in my pasture on cribbing that I took down from the field across the road when they removed the old homestead two years ago . It worked when I took it down . It was 60ft tall with a 7 or 9 foot fan - I forget . It's shorter now because I cut it off at ground level . I picked it up complete with our rough terrain crane and carried it to my place across the road . It does need new babbit bearings poured . Does anyone know how to do that ? I've read that pouring hot babbit metal can be a risky proposition .

Does anyone know how to plant one in the ground ? I want to get it set up sometime . I've been told to just bore 4 holes in the ground about 5 feet deep , weld or bolt some flat plate on the bottom of the legs and backfill it with dirt . Will that work ? Thanks ...Randy

Hi glennster , I looked the site over and it's interesting . The bearings in a windmill have to be poured in place though . That's just the way they were made or at least this one was . There's this thing about having hot molten metal explode out of a improperly prepped piece that has me a little antsy . Any oil or moisture at all and PAIN ! I would like to try it but not without expert guidance within eyesight . I'm not the brash young kid I used to be ! So this is one of those things that IMHO should be left to someone that has experience doing it . Besides I don't have a garage or shop or shed to work in so a lot of things don't get done by me that I'm capable of doing myself . Have a Good New Year ! ...Randy

Randy, I put up a 1937 Aermotor, 35' tall and 8' fan at my hobby farm about 5 years ago. You do need to be anchored in cement about 5 feet deep. I had 4 angle iron pieces made, 5 feet long, with a pad on the bottom of them. bolted them to the windmill tower at the base. Put sauna tubes into the holes (around the angle iron pieces). Filled them with Sakrete, poured in some water, backfilled around the sauna tubes. Never had a problem. Pumps water just great. If you send me your email address, I'll send you a picture or two.

Randy: Yes ,in my lifetime I have poured hundreds of babbit bearings.I will be willing to talk you thru this process, however a lot depends upon wheather your bearing can be removed to a shop bench or,if they are split or solid, also will they need to be machined or need to be poured in place.I am a poor and slow typist so to cover all of this ground it will require a long and windy post. I will be happy to try to help but need some information. Please call me at 830 997 8296.Regards,John Cooney. Happy New Year
