Im wanting to get this 970 No cab, desert sand color,
this guy want,s 7000 for it, and i now it,s more than 30 yrs old albieit,. redone paint and top end of engine,
has powershift, and look,s ok,
Is this too much for a 970no cab,?I mean I like the tractor,
But I dont know if I wanna pay that much for it,?>?
also I saw this 97 massey , not running, and this other guy wanted 1000 for it,
Sholud I get the case, and pass on that massey,
since the case is ALOT NEWER, and you can probably get part,s for it alot easier than that massey?
I like both,
But Im stumped as to know what to do,?

Sounds to me like the guy doesn't really want to sell the 970... That is too much money for one around here, you could easily get a JD 3010-3020 for less, and they are overpriced... We had a 1370, it was a great tractor and I've heard good things about the smaller ones, but he sounds high...

A lot has to do with how you take care of them, but all colors break down at some point. Our neighbor across the fence has had a 4020 which he bought new. He has had a LOT of trouble with it over the years. Expensive repairs. We've had very litle trouble with our power shift equipped 70 series tractors, but you never know.

7000 is too much and I would shy away from the power shift (big bucks to rebuild) if you could find one with a regular 8 speed trans then by all means go for it. Igotta go

Without seeing either tractor, it sounds like you need to decide first what you want - a) a tractor to use or a b) project to restore.

If I were shelling out $7000 for a good small tractor, I'd look for a nice 4020 JD. I've even seen a decent 4840 sell for $7200 at auction and it would be WAY more tractor than a 970.

We had a 1570 Case - I liked driving it since it had great power steering, pretty tight turning radius, etc... But we really had a lot of trouble with it compared to the John Deere (6030's, 4840's, 4440).

Someone else would know more than me - but I think that Massey is a rebadged Moline, so it shouldn't be too hard to find parts for.
