Using vegetable oil in diesel engine

Greetings.

I have a small quantity of used vegetable oil from frying fish (a few jars). I"d like to add it to the diesel fuel in my tractors but I am not sure what, if anything, I need to do to it first. I can probably filter it through s cheesecloth or something to get rid of the bigger particles.

Is this OK or would I hurt the engines? Also, should I have a certain ratio of veg. oil to diesel?

Thanks in advance.

Hey CB, go to www.dieselpowermag.com. This is a great magazine, and it is all diesel powered articles. They have had some articles about using cooking oil in your diesel engines Link
this>Link video is on the web site above, and it kinda convinced me not to use straitgh veggie oil in my truck. If this guy is right, the long term damage can be severe.????

I know a couple of guys that filter it to 10 microns and then run 5 gallons per tankful on the Dodge Cummins. They only do it in the summer and have had no problems.

HERE IS WHAT WE DO, WE HAVE A 4 STAGE SYSTEM THAT WE USE TO FILTER VEG OIL, ALL WE ARE USEING IS CHEESE CLOTH FOR THE FIRST 2 STAGES, AND REGULAR RESTURANT FILTERS ON THE SECOND 2, ON MY POWERSTROKE I HAVE A 150 L-SHAPED TANK THAT HAS HEATERS ON IT TO "THIN" THE OIL, AND HEATERS ON THE FUEL LINE, I HAVE 2 FILTERS FROM THE TANK GOING TO A SWITCH, I START THE TRUCK ON REGULAR DIESEL, AND SWITCH TO VEG OIL GOING DOWN THE HIWAY, A FRIEND OF MINE WORKS AT A FEED MILL AND RUNS PURE UNFILTERD COTTON SEED OIL IN HIS TRUCK--PLAYS HELL ON THE INJECTORS THOUGH--IT SHOULD WORK ON A TRACTOR AS LONG AS THE OIL IS THIN AND HASN"T HAD TIME TO "DRY" OR THICKIN UP, ALSO CHECK WITH RESTURANTS IN YOUR AREA, WE GO AND PICK UP USED OIL AT NO DISPOSAL COST TO THE RESTURANT IN 55 GALLON DRUMS, FUEL IS CHEAPER THT WAY

Works just fine as long as you filter it good enough and I do mean good. If you don't you will clog your fuel filters pretty quick

Don't do it in winter ( assuming we have any winter). Typically veg oil must be heated to run a diesel on it or cut with kerosene so it is thinner. Such a small amount would probably not harm anything. You might put some diesel in a jar and add some veg oil and see if it mixes or seperates. I would wait till summer though because veg oil has a much higher gel point.
