Sorry for getting so off topic..... ..but has any of you owned or knew someone that has owned a Ford Escape and how did they get along with it.
Mom is going on 81 and has a real problem getting in and out of her Taurus, I took her to the Ford dealership the other day and she drove an Escape, it was really easy for her to get in and out of and said she liked sitting up higher. Any comments would be appericated.

STAY AWAY! I am an insurance adjuster, and my company issues these Escapes to us for use in our jobs. In my office we have 5 of them. We have been running them since 2002 I think..and rotate them out at around 75k. They are well maintained, and are used mostly for highway driving, but some short distance driving to.
Here's what happens to every one like clockwork...it's scary but true.
1)Ball joints at around 50k, and intermittently tie rod ends around the same time.
2)Transfer case fails in about half of them at around 45k.
3)Wiring harness for headlights burn up...in every single one so far.
4)Tires last around 25k miles, no matter what brand used.
5)Brakes every 15k or so. Rotors warp too.
6)We have replaced at least 3 transmissions under the 50k mark.
7)Various electronic/emissions issues.
*
Now there are some good points. They are, I think, pretty comfortable, and the interiors hold up well.
They aren't very good on gas...i would guess somewhere around 18 mpg combined city/highway in 2wd, much less if 4wd engaged.
I personally would look elsewhere. The Buick Rendezvous are a much better engineered vehicle...and if you are open to foreign makes the Subaru Forester is a good unit too.

My wife and SIL rented one over thanksgiving to go from fort lauderdale to atlanta and back, they both said they wished theyd got something else, while it didnt give any trouble they said it was a very uncomfortable car, didnt like the seats, space, road noise, wind noise or handling and they said it seemed like they were always stopping for gas. If she only wants to go to the store and back or any short trips it would prob be ok but if she was gonna drive any distance Id keep looking, keep in mind that wife has had Grand marquis as last 4 cars.

Brother has one. Has been really good to him. I have ridden in it and the quality seems to be pretty good. Handles nice. Thing is really quite fast. Overall good little vehicle. I did hear they drop in value pretty quickly though, but what doesn't nowdays. Buy it.

I have one that was issued as a company car. Currently have a little over 20,000 miles on it. Only normal maintenance has been done.

Now the bad. The A/C takes forever to start working in the summer. 70 mph on the highway and it blows hot air for 10 minutes. Not impressed.
The ride is very rough. Very bouncy. The short wheelbase is not good at all.
When you are driving down the road the steering is so sensitive that it feels like it could run off the road and flip in a heartbeat.
The seats are the most uncomfortable that I have ever ridden in. There is not very much room in the seat either. Armrests are not functional for a 6' 210 lbs guy.
Last, fuel mileage. Terrible. I drive all highway miles, 70 mph on cruise control all the time. 21 mpg is the best it has gotten. I have a Dodge 2500 Quad Cab CTD that gets 21.5 mpg consistently.

So, if it is just going to set in the driveway all the time, it might be perfect. If it is meant to be driven, I would find something that is better.

I got a new one in 05 as a company car. I have 60,000 miles on it and have done nothing but change the oil. 6cyl 2WD. It goes geat in the snow for a 2WD. From what I here from my co-workers nobody except the guy in New Jersy has had a problem. He needed a transmission under warrenty. Jeep has a Liberty and a Compass you may also like. Most of my work I fly too and rent a car like yesterday I flew to Elpaso TX. and drove to Carlsbad NM. I got my favorit car from Avis. Chevy Impala. Those things ride and drive like a dream. This is a flat safe desert drive and three times a warning light came on and said "speed is limited to 113 MPH. I usually cruise the desert in the 80's but these things drive so smooth I'm glad they have a limiter to let you know. Its considered a full/mid size and she may like it also. I hate GM but thumbs up to the Impalla. In the city they whip around nice. Tonight I fly to Oaklahoma city and drive to Stillwater OK. You don't speed in OK. if you wind up with the Escape she will like it. Mine came with huge tires from the factory for a small car P235x75x16 you must run them at the pressure listed on the door jam for the right ride and handling.

The 2WD is that front wheel drive as well? Becasue with front wheel drive it works real well and with a higher ground clearance then it should go through snow better then a car.

The 2WD Escape is a front wheel drive. As an urban commuter they are pretty good units - my sister has one. You can put it in 4X4 and drive it on dry pavement (for a road with only patchy snow pack) without hurting the drive train. It has a a "torque converter" to absorb the differances in speed between the front and rear axles. The V6 has about 200hp and is much better then the average Taurus for acceleration and just a bit less in mileage.

I own a 2003 Mazda tribute which is the same as the Ford Escape. My wife and I love it. It has 53000 miles and has had no problems at all. Pleanty of power and is great in the snow. Rick

The only bad thing I have heard is the seats in them can be uncomfortable on long trips.

Both a friend who test drove one and my folks have said this.

But...I guess that just depends on how it fits you.

I've only driven an Escape once, as a test drive, (we were looking to replace my wife's Ford Explorer). I thought it was responsive, handled nice, but the ride quality wasn't any better than the Jeep wrangler I drive daily. I also thought the interior materials on the "light" side, not enough padding in the seat even though I could find a comfortable position. It also didn't offer several options that I wanted (compass, built in garage remote, 5000lb towing capacity)

We went and looked at the Jeep Liberty. It was also a responsive handling vehicle and it actually rode better (like it weighed more) plus it offered all the options we were looking for and had a 5000lbs tow rating. The interior materials where more or less the same, but I felt the seat had more padding.

I think you'd get more truck for the money buying the Liberty, but then I admit to being a Jeep person. I was also trying to replace an Eddie Baur Equipped Explorer, the Escape can't come close but with the available options in the Liberty we could.

I would take mom the jeep dealer and let her drive the liberty.

You might also consider an Explorer. I really like them, we're on our 5th one. (I've had a '91, '93, '96, '99, and now a 2000)
