Hi this is a little off topic because its about trucks but they will be hauling my antique tractors. Im looking for some opinions on a couple trucks Im looking at and what prices they go for. First is a 1999 International 4700 with the DT 466 motor and allison auto. It has 149,000 miles just the cab and chassis, frame repainted, nice paint on cab. It has hyd brakes and needs new tires. Price is $8500 obo.
Second is a 1998 Freightliner FL 60 with a 3126 Cat and 5 speed manual. It has 168,000 miles has good tires, bench seat and hyd brakes. It comes with a flatbed and 4 undermount toolboxes. Will have price tomorrow because I said I was interested as is not to clean it up. Both were a porta-john companies trucks and are a local companies and know the owner and workers so nothing will be hidden. Anyone haul with either of these or know good and bads about motor trans etc? I plan to have a flat bed with dove tail on truck then have a gooseneck to pull behind it. Thanks for help.
Matt

I spent about a year piecing together a1975 C65 chevy , 427 engine , 5 speed trans. , 2 speed rear all hydraulic , roll back , 25 foot flat bed. Can haul 450 & M farmalls with golf cart sideways on the back end . Truck has plenty of power. gets better fuel milage than 1 ton pulling goose neck

GMC 7000 366 GasserRe: O/T Good Trucks For Hauling in reply to big red fred, 01-27-2007 08:47:58
I have a 87 GMC 7000 26000 GVW with a 366 carburetted gasser 72000 mi nice condition and the fuel mileage is terrible. Is the 427 all that much better. Coarse I only used it to run to the steel mill to pickup steel with it and was city driving most of the way.

427 fuel milage . The governed carburator and ignition have been removed ,carb. is now 650 holley , ignition is HEI but you must use orignal distributor drive gear ,this takes a little modifing to interchange the gears. those origanal 366 - 427 carbs are a real S.O.B. to make work correctly.. Truck also has 3 inch pipes from manifolds to 4 inch Flow Master mufflers with stacks 1 foot above cab. friend has 366 truck it uses more gas than this one. I haqve ran this truck around 7000 miles with no problems.

Well OK Re: GMC 7000 366 GasserRe: O/T Good Trucks in reply to big red fred, 01-27-2007 15:25:24
My truck is all stock, under the hood, but is equipped with stainless steel headers and dual under truck 3 or 4 in pipes and mufflers. Was this exhaust a stock item or special order. This truck is very nice and well kept as it was owned by Star rentals and used for equipment deliveries only by them. I bought it from them 7 years ago for $1800. 5+2 disc brakes Stake Flat Bed 29500 GVW door tag. Just cant figure why anyone would order with a 366 though. I also think it to be a CA approved model. Lots and Lots extra air pipes on the engine.
It is a real pain to tighten the Alt belt too. I cut a small hole in the inside fender to get at the bolts ;))

Seems like a lot of money for the either truck. Our local fire district buys route delivery trucks, bid is anywhere from $3000 for $4500 with the box pulled off. Usually 2 ton Fords or IH's, DT 466's or 444's. They sell them off at about 180,000. Fire dept sells them after 10 years, with not more than 5000 more miles on them on bid after they pull the tanks off. Rarely bid more than $2000. If I get back to hauling wet distillers grains I'm keeping the tank.

Any company truck gets abused horribly. The allison autos they put in those trucks are good. WHen repairing though, its expensive, like anything else. I would never buy a truck that size w/ hydraulic brakes, failure (line break etc) can be deadly, air brakes, you have a chance and much better stopping power. Hydraulic brakes are much more costly to repair as well. I would definitly take the international vs a freightshaker anyday, and a dt466 will be about the same power but alot heavier duty motor.

Hydraulic Brakes Vs Airbrake??? Re: O/T Good Truck in reply to thejdman01, 01-26-2007 16:07:51
First let me say hydraulic brakes that are well maintained rarely fail.
Now the other problem in my state if you have airbrake you MUST have a CDL and an airbrake endorsement to drive that truck no mater the size or GVW. Thats the airbrake killer here for mid size trucks 16 to 26 GVW

All I know is that I would never take an automatic no matter how well-constructed, long it lasts, and how good other people say it is. I will NOT buy an automatic.

I really like the idea of having a long flat bed for one tractor and then the gooseneck trailer. That is a really good idea.

Hi dds,

I"m also not a auto fan but I do like the sound of the Eaton auto-shift, a all gear driven either 10spd or 18spd, that only needs a clutch to stop or start.

The up/down shifts are automatic rpm controlled and can be user programed at the drivers seat.

I have a 20 Hr. per week part time job running a Portable Rest Room [thats what we call them]Route here in Central Arizona covering about 180 Miles and 35 Units twice a week. I must stress"Do not ever buy a used Truck from one of these buisnesses. They get abused terribly.

All i can tell you is that a neighbor had a IH tandem truck with the 466 and its still going strong with very little wrenching on it. Its an early 70's model
