Just wanted to know what some of you think about the International DT466 diesel motors in the International dump trucks. Is it a good motor? What are the known problems with them?

In combines they are excellent,Reliable and lots of grunt.
the 466 in my 1480 will just about keep up with my 1688 with cummins ( pump has been tweaked a little )

First of all can you be a little more specific. The reason I am asking is there are about three different versions of a DT-466 from the original to the later ones and then the 4 valve motor introduced about 3 years ago. In fact not all DT-466 engines have the same bore and stroke. All in all a good engine if you keep clean water free fuel in them. Of course that is true with any of them.

I will agree, used to run one in a short wheel base single axle dump, with a 10 speed fuller, it was the perfect little single axle, absolutely loved the way it performed, not to mention the durability. Plenty of power and a good match for the 10 speed.

These are a great motor that are good for the higher rpms. Keep it on top of that turbo and you wont be disappointed. We have them in several of our farm trucks and they are bulletproof. They will outlast the truck. I dont really think they are noisy. They run just like a wristwatch. A local truck mechanic and salvage yard owner swears up and down these motors will run forever at 3000 rpm so let the m scream.

As allan says they are an excellent engine but i never thot they were all that noisy,,,but then im still living with a Norwegian so maybe a 466 just seems quite,,,,There work good in delivery trucks and tandems but some guys pulled pups or to big a loads with them and they will NOT take lugging--You lug them and they will dye...I got me a 1460 with a smaller CI ih engine,,same block though and she runs all day long at 2800 rpm and i know of nobody else out there that can stand them kind of RPMs...I have also always felt my 466 was very easy on fuel

I think the Hypermax tractor pulling guy's say the 400 series engine lower end is good for 6,000 rpm in stock form although you probably wouldn't want to run it for a long time at that speed.

Had a lot of experience with these when I was in the towing bisiness. Saw one start smoking some around 250,000 miles, new injecter seals fixed the problem. In a wrecker anyways,at around 450,000 or 500,000 miles most of em have outlasted the truck it came in.

Allan is right-don't worry unless it AIN'T makin plenty of noise.

About the only weak spot in the 466 is that the sleeves tend to suffer from coolant cavitation pitting. Make sure it has a coolant filter and it is replaced regularlly and change the coolant every two years to.

Hate to tell a guy he is wrong, especially you but IH made a lot of bad engines. I think about all their gassers (my opinion anyways-hate gassers to boot) and most definately the V800's and those 550 V8 diesels... especially the ones with the idle on 4 run on 8 IP's. Yikes!
