I have -20 right now. Thank God this wasnt clean out week. I am sitting pretty good here but neighbors are dealing with frozen well lines to the house and frozen septic lines. Umlike some areas of MN, we have less than 1/2" snow so the frost is really getting down there. Gonna spend the day checking on a few of the elders in the area and see if they need anything from town or such. Too cold for them older folk to be having to run to town for medicine or groceries. How are you all doing?

Yea, sounds like we better keep the brass monkeys in for a few more days yet. We are of course a day closer to spring.

It speaks well of you to be concerned about others. I have invited over three different friends that are keeping there houses at 45. Not enough beds to go around, but plenty of wood. So far to much pride to accept. Problem is all three probably can't get credit enough to get their tanks filled again. Saddly, as it isn't the falt of any one of them, just bad luck. Probably it's just as sad their insurance will not allow a wood stove inside their houses.

Well, most every one was fine, bought some milk, coffee, eggs, and NyQuil. Seems most were well stocked. Carried some wood in the base ment for one. Worst situation is my brothers home. His water line from the well to the house froze up!! solid, and he needs water to boil to keep his septic line from freezing. Ran a garden hose from the pump house to the house but that froze up over night, heat tape has an open wire. I have a feeling he is screwed on the waterline till spring, if it doesnt rupture any where under ground. Any one have any ideas??

If it's a steel or copper line, heres what a local welder would do.Hook a welding lead to to each end and start the welder. Then stop the welder really fast.Worked pretty good,You have to be fast about it and you can melt the sweated fittings on a copper line. And you can burn your house down.(But a house without water isn't worth much) John.

If it isn't to far from the pit here is something that has worked before.

He will have to get water to the hot water heater and then some small hose.

Hook the small hose to the hot water line and stick it inside the frozen line.

Turn it on and keep sliding it in and it will thaw its way thru.

But he will have to let water run to stop it from freezing again.

Or stack big bales of hay over the line and it may thaw from the bottom up.

11:00 A.M. in Great Falls MT and it's 55* here. it was 46 when I got up at 7:00 this morning. I just hope the ice in the alley melts before the temperature drops down to normal (lower 30"s) later this week. About 28 years ago I was lying on my belly in 6 inches of snow next to a salt water disposal tank in a Kansas oilfield trying to open up a frozen line. I think I like this better.

pretty chilly around here too. Was 14 this morning with a nice airy breeze. And fellers, let me tell you....a skirt in this weather just ain't no fun! We are 'posed to get some more of that nasty white stuff later this week. But hey, the ponds are now full and we are getting some ground moisture out of this, so the cold is like mosquitos in the summer, you just keep fighting it and griping about it. Yall take care and have a good'un. CL

Good grief! When isnt it supposed to get warmer? My toes are freezing and I just walked to the Greenhouses and back. Man it was warm in there 75 degrees. Now we are all smart men, Whay cant a guy run some water pipe though a greenhouse warm it to 80 and then run it through registers in his house. Its zero out now, and it was 75 in there and no furnaces running we use them at night only. There would be alot of water pupming but i bet it would be cheaper than outer means. DTURKE

It was below 0 all night, been hoverin between there and 20 to 30 as a high in the last few days with a light wind, and 4" of snow cover. Right now at 7 deg, probably won't reach 20 today.

Kind of mild compared to -20 or -30, which this area rarely sees, but not too far north from here, I've worked in those -30 temperatures, kind of prefer it a bit warmer myself LOL, say 0 to 20, can get used to that and still work outside, except if the wind is a blowin, that always does me in.

We have close to 10" of ice on the 20 acre pond, and some smooth wind blown ice to skate on in the area we cleared off with an ATV with a snow plow. It was open water 3 weeks ago.

So that jetstream finally took a dive and delivered the artic air, and if I recall when it first did so, there was no snow cover here, so I'm hoping some of the insects like ticks, gnats, black flies were decimated, I'm actually not sure how they are affected by the cold, but after last years warm winter, those ticks were abundant. I can't recall the last time we had a deep freeze with little or no snow cover.

It is -5F here in Michigan. My sons school is closed today. I had to come home early and let my wife go to work. I remember school closing only for deep snow but never the cold. My forced air furnace is broke, I am running the corn stove to keep the house warm, will only go up to 66F. Make the wifey more fridgid then usual.

I have -22 right now in east-central WI. Just went out to start the truck, had to start it 3 times. It shut off the first two times. Checked on the steers, they are fine. Hard to believe they can stay warm on a day like this. They are outside with only a three sided shed to keep them out of the wind. I think I will have to plug the tractor in before I feed this morning. Started hard yesterday and was only -18.

I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather like you all are having up north right now. Stay warm and keep on helping others.

We got a little sleet and snow here in NE Arkansas last Wednesday, maybe a couple inches but pretty well gone by Saturday. Night time tempertures around 16-20 deg warming to 40 during the day. Fairly mild this year so far.

Dave, your doing a good thing checking on the seniors, more people need to care like you do. Have a good one.

Butch, sorry I have to say this, This is what we always responded to my late mother and her walking to school. SEE MOM the kids are smarter today because we just ride the buss. Seemed that the chore load always got a little bigger after that remark.

I was the biggest woose in the whole state as the school buss turned around in our house yard and I had to walk a total of 30 feet from the house.

My son one time as a little lad asked why all the other kids in town got a ride to school but he didn't and that wasn't exactly fair. I informed him that the street is only 33 ft wide in our town and the car is 18 foot long. GO DO YOUR MATH. .....We live directly across the street from the schools door. I should point out that when he was 14 he said the teacher said to not eat pink hamberger as he broke his in half. It probably would be a good point other than his very favorite food for x-mas, birthdays or actually anytime I allow him to make it is raw dog. (RAW hamberger, raw eggs, raw onion) Has been since he was two. (something wrong with the boy is a what I'm a thinkin) way to much inbreeding here in NE IA.
