been looking at tractor photos here and photo ads, and see a lot of (all brands) tractors painted wrong colors. i was just wondering what people are thinking when they paint stuff or do they just don't know what the real color should be. WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT THIS, OR AM I JUST TOO PICKY?

My WD45 was painted red instead of the original orange long before I purchased it. My spouse bought me a little model Farmall tractor as part of my Christmas stocking, apparently thinking it was the same tractor!

Thats the colors that it was painted when my father bought it back in 1963. One time at the show, some jerk gave my daughter a hard time about the color of her tractor. He had a 1930 C that was parked right next to her. She was about in tears when I showed up. I said, look at this jerks tractor. It has rubber tires on it, it has the wrong mainfold (Case D) on it, wrong carb, Changed over to a V-belt, and the wrong mag. And he's crying about the color of yours. Your tractor is a lot more original than his. Made her feel better.

Not too picky - just too wide of a range in being picky. If you are competing in a tractor show, it makes sense to set some standards of conformity. Outside of that, owner"s choice.

It"s like a beauty contest for women. There seems to be a lot of conformity for them within the contest, but away from those silly contests, there sure is a lot of non-conformity and most men aren"t complaining.

I think my granddaughter expressed it correctly back at her birthday party when she was six. A neighbor"s lttle three year-old kept picking up the unopened presents and yelling "what is this - what is this?" Finally my granddaughter looked directly at her and coldly replied:

WHAT IT IS - IS MINE! (That goes for tractors also).

(Yet, I have to admit that I really enjoy seeing a tractor fully restored to exactly what it looked like when brand-new.)

I will agree with one point someone made: If I choose to do that, I have no business trying to pass it off as "correct" via coffee table books or calendars or suchlike.

Does somebody other than your wife tell you how to arrange the furniture in your house or what groceries to buy? It is not likely, you make your choices and lay down your money and it's nobody else's business. It is getting pitiful listening to people whine and moan about someone having a tractor that they don't use and won't sell or that they want to use for lawn art or rose planters. Come on people you don't have a right to make the decisions on something just because you see it and ewant it. Women often have curio cabinets full of things they just want to look at then when they die most of it gets given away or thrown away. If someone wants to look at dad's or grandpa's old equipment setting around it is their business. I love old machinery and I love new machinery some is for using, some is for looking, some is for both and some has reached the point where it needs to be melted down and shaped into something that can serve a productive purpose again. If someone wants to have one last hurrah at the combine demolition derby after removing any salvageable thresher parts it's their business. Most of the post here are from people who live in the land of the free, let other people be free with items they have paid for or inherited. Instead of complaining about a tractor being painted outside of the factory specifications purchase it at a reduced price because it obviously is not a desirable, functional or marketable unit by your standards and use the savings to restore it. Would your rather pay an inflated price for the typical substandard repaints that have used the correct colors. I have had my say now you may do what you wish with your equipment and I will continue to do what I wish with mine (no permission required of course).

If you don't like it and it's for sale buy it and change it. If it is not for sale leave the people alone!

Most of them won't tell you the "real" reason that they are the wrong color but they all have an "after the fact" reason that justifies it , at least in their minds. Even people who still had black/white TV,s into the '70,s always had a story as to why. I'll bet it was so they would be different than averyone else. Why would you want to have color? then you would be just like all the neighbors.

aww, we got our first color set from my in-laws! We'd had a lot of expensive Dr. bills with our 3 sons, along with the cost of adoptions,(3) and i wasn't making much money on the G.I. Bill, so we watched Black and White for a long time-got to the point that the green grass got even greener! Heck, our tv set was so worn, we had to turn the channel switch with pliers! Did that make us feel inferior? Naw, just frugal! And, when we could afford it-we bought a good used color set! Lasted 5 years, then bought a new one-when we could afford to pay cash! And that after the mortgage payment each month! Life, love, marriage, family, costs money, but if you do it right, it lasts, color tv notwithstanding! So-paint yer wagons any color ya want! As long as they run good, do what they are intended to do, and hold up well, who cares if a CC is painted blue or red. RJ

On the other hand, a tractor painted a loud and obnoxious color would be pretty good theft insurance. Police could spot a purple tractor pretty quick.

I have a 1947 Earthmaster that was painted for a parade and the blue paint turned out PURPLE with the red wheels. It is plug ugly!!

My 1940 9n is ford blue with white sheetmetal. I get a lot of compliments on it actually. Most people think the battleship grey is just ugly including me. I don't want it to look like everybody elses tractor. I want it to look like mine. If it makes you happy though we have 3 farmalls that look like everybody elses!

Just a few days ago I got chewed out on here for saying a 9N is SUPPOSED to be "battleship gray"! I was told a darker gray was needed!

Battleship grey shades vary from paint store to store. I saw the post that tried to correct you. I think he is one of the correct police that often screws up.

The story behind "battleship gray" as I recall, was that the Navy had purchased a tremendous amount of gray paint and then decided that it was the wrong shade. The Navy made a verbal deal with someone at Ford to unload the paint at an agreed upon price and delivered it to Ford only to have old Henry call the deal off after it was unloaded. They finally agreed upon a ridiculously low price for it and Ford proceeded to paint their 9N and 2N tractors with it.

my little gray fergie got flames on a red hood and green belly why? because i like it i use the tractor everyday and the color hasnt caused a breakdown yet nor have i been ridiculed on my color i found that i get more referrals to new customers with a nice looking machine weather it be the brand new new holland tl 90 or the nice looking fergie to-20 than i did with the rusty to-20 and the beat up ford 5030

Cars and trucks are painted many colors..Why not tractors? I have been wondering what my Ford 3600 would look like painted red and gray like my Ford 801.

sounds like you're worryin' over a lot of rather elementary stuff.

If you don't want a tractor that is painted a certain color, then don't buy one.

It's their tractor, they can do what they want with it.

My biggest pet peeve is when you have a tractor painted a completely off the wall color, and it's featured in a book or calendar. I saw a picture of a 12-20 Crossmotor Case painted MIST GREEN with yellow pinstripes. Alost turned my stomach. I would think that if you were publishing something like that, you would at least make sure the tractor was correct. Even if the paint is faded and rusty, at least it's correct.

I have to agree. Seeing a tractor, all incorrectly painted up, with wrong decals, wrong seat cushions, stainless steel straight pipes and other fooh-bahs and having the tractor labled "restored" and passed off as being CORRECT really annoys me! Not that the tractor is so badly mis-painted, but that someone PUBLISHED a PICTURE and labeled it as being how it was supposed to look!

CUSTOM paint ought to be identified as being such!

In a more extreme example, It is also possible to fabricate your own high crop antique tractor. Should someone who does that be also encouraged to try and pass of his Frankenstien tractor as ORIGINAL and try to demand top dollar price for it? Say ne starts with a rare JD 730DIESEL high crop and grafts the parts onto an LPG 730 high crop tractor, thus creating an artificial (ultra scarce) tractor.

Admittedly, incorrect paint jobs for the most part only make the owner look SIMPLE but if you try and sell the tractor to someone as being expensively restored, and the buyer finds out later that your expensive paint job and decals all have to expensively be redown because they aren't right, that to me smacks of minor dishonesty.

Publishing a picture of an incorrectly painted tractor, and presenting such to other people who are looking for ACCURATE information as to how it originally looked is one of the reasons why so many people have to ask those questions here! YOu just can't trust the published photos!

I see your point, and you are correct in that people can do what they wish with their stuff. However, if you were going to the trouble and expense of painting your tractor, why wouldn't you at least use the color it was in when it came from the factory? Why paint an H Farmall in John Deere green?

well...here's one reason. my '55 TO35 is red and silver. it was that color when i bought it. when i showed my wife what colors it was SUPPOSE to be, she wrinkled up her nose and said..."i like red". guess what? my 35 is staying red!

she thinks my tractor's s**y,
it really turns her on....

Sometimes you really can't tell what the original coler was so you go with your best guess on matching. Other times a person may paint it a particular color because he likes that color. I see post regularly from people who insist that they have a green CC. THen there were the companies like IH that used whatever shade the supplier sent in that batch.
It's all a matter of taste. Sure, we Case people know what FLambeau is supposed to look like but there are many different theories on LC and RC greys.
