I am looking to buy a winch for my trailer. I plan on using it to pull cars and smaller tractors to about 8000 lbs on it. What load ratings do they use on winches? What brand does everyone recommend?

Ramsey makes a good 8000 pound winch called REP. It's only cheap in price to compete with the china winches. Check the 4x4 websites for the best deal. 429.00 last I checked.

I bought one at Harbor Frieght, 8000#,I have pulled a 3/4 pickup up on trailer with trailor sitting up hill with no problem, all so pulled a 1486 on trailor and parked up hill so tractor would roll off, used winch to hold as tractor rolled forward off. Don't use it ever day, but when I have needed to use it, it has worked just fine for me.

Have a friend who hauls tractors and he uses an 8000# winch from Harbor Freight. Says he busted a part once and Harbor was able to order the replacement part. For around 400 dollars you can get a 10,000 pounder. Use a snatch block and double that. Makes quite a difference. I have and use a Warn, but if I were to buy again, I would seriously consider the Harbor Freights biggest one.

Most self recovery winches uses the first layer line pull rating.
Most cheapy, lightweighs have some rolling load rating.
PTO winches tell you how much they should be used for. If you overload them enough they bust.

You should be probably be looking at a 5000-8000 lb self recovery winch. The cheap ones will be slow and not need much power. The better ones will be fast and use lots o juice.

i bought mine at harbor frieght, yes i know its not the best, but it has a one year warrenty on it, i have a 8000 # with a auto brake and it works fine i used it nearly every day for a month, and it burnt out, i took it back and got a new one and only use it now and then and its fine with a full battery, it cost around 300, you can get a 10000# for around 400
