After not much use this winter, I have gotten it out on the road a few times and noticed that the rear main engine seal is leaking. After parking for a few minutes,I have a palm-sized puddle. Just wondering if any of you think it will get better after some use, or should I make plans to replace it?. Are any of the snake oil seal softeners any good? Thanks for your input.

Speaking from experience in reply to Jim in NC, 03-09-2007 11:21:02
Hey there, I have a 89 Cummins that I experienced the very same issue with. When my truck started leaking, it was because it had sat almost a year because of transfer case problems. My rear main seal was leaking and on the advice of my mechanic, I bought and added to the engine oil, a bottle of TriSeal. This within 45 miles had stopped the leak and in the last 2 years has not leaked at all. I bought the stuff at CarQuest and I have been real impressed by it. The power steering had started to leak also and this additive has stopped both leaks. If I were you, I would try it, all you have to lose is the cost of the additive, and it could save you hundreds in unnessasary expense. The seals in those old trucks dry out from not being used, once they expand they seal just fine and will last.

I have a 93 Dodge Cummins, rear seal was replaced at 50,000 miles under warranty, didn't take long to make an oily mess in the bell housing. They had to put a clutch in too cause it got oiled.Thank goodness for the 7/70,000 drivetrain warranty.Dodge covered the whole thing.Got 130k on it now,no problems. If it was me I'd fix it,thats a pretty good size leak.
