9n woes!

Man its been a while since I worked on one of these. I almost forgot how difficult a front distributor can be. Cant see, dropping the screws. Just all around bad, and on top of it..lets put a belt next to it. Have to take the hood completly off to work on it.I never owned one, or ran one of these...but my word I would rather own a Ferguson To-20 or 30 than one of these. Seems like the mass production was on the mind vs. ability to work on them. Now that im older it seems they are more automotiveIZED than most tractors. Meaning shares alot of automotive engineering than other tractors. Well the Man did make the assembly line. And im not knocking it I just think its different. And lets keep this between us and not with those guys on the 8n-9n board. DTURKE

Take the distributor off and work on the bench.Same with the Ford cars.I cant stop laughing when I see take the hood off.

Definitely designed to use proven automotive designs by automotive engineers. But I think its more like half a flat head V-8 than a model A engine. Especially with the distributor driven off the end of the camshaft where its hard to work on. I remember my dad had a 33 and a 36 V-8 and he'd run them until they would hardly run, then drag the distributor out and replace and adjust points, and then run it until they wore out. It was harder to get to the distributor in the car than the tractor.

Owning a 9N is a WOE unto it's own self. They only great things about them was that they had the Ferguson lift system and were cheap enough for many farmers to afford them in lieu of a mule team. The engine is a lot like the Model A Ford in design, except the distributor is in the front of the engine,instead of the center of the cylinder head. The left brake pedal on the same side with the clutch is a real Jim Dandy too! Try using the clutch and both brakes at the same time to stop the tractor in a panic situation. And don't you love those foot pegs instead of a running board?

If you couldn't use the clutch and both brakes.. then the unit you were on was not maintained well.

Man your going about it all wrong. As the other guys say remove the 2 bolts hold the distibutor on pull it out, put in the points, set at 0.015 then reinstall it. It will only go on one way unless you force it to go then you will most likely brake things

DTURKE; If you think thats bad, you ought to put a set of points and condenser in a 1946 or 1947 ford v8;down by the damper pully. It would make the POPE cuss like a mule skinner, B.T.D.T. Ken

I had a point spring break on a 48 Ford.I was sharp enough to know the distributor came off with 2 bolts and the points came out with simple tools using the front fender as a work bench.I pulled a distributor out of a 36 Ford when I was 17 and never thought I could change the points with the distributor in the car.It was common to buy a rebuilt distributor from the Western Auto and not bother changing points.The 42 to 48 distributor was easy to work on.I cant imagine anyone changing points in the car or tractor without pulling the distributor out.Dont leave the coil or cap gaskets out unless you want a rusty mess.

And it is almost an impossibility to get it back in wrong because the drive cam and the slot it fits into are offset. And its location down low in front of the engine also keeps want-a-be's from messing with the settings because of its hard to reach location.
