What's the best general purpose tractor?

Hi all,
I inherited a 1953 Farmall Super C with tricycle front wheels and I'm interested in trading it for a tractor with a lower profile and separate front wheels (further apart) Perhaps something like the Ford 8N? I'm concerned more about function than appearance. Uses would likely include bush-hogging, snow plowing, garden plowing and disking, and occasionally dragging junk cars to a different spot on the farm. A bucket or blade would be nice, but not vital. I don't want anything too new or expensive. What are your opinions on the best choices? Thanks for any advice.

There's been very little mention of the Allis Chalmers D-14 and D-15. In my mind, these tractors are among the best "value" for the dollar. Especially the D-14s. Very good ones can be had in the 2,000 to 3,000 range. Way more hp then an 8n. Plus, you get live PTO with the power director! And as a bonus, you get an infinite speed adjuster with the power director! Want to creep along at .0001 miles an hour while brush hogging a thick patch? Use the power director! The PTO keeps going no matter how slow you go. Same with running a small baler, or other implement. The clutch runs in an oil bath, so it doesn't care how much you slip it. Plus, you get 8 speeds! Power steering available if you need a loader. 3 pnt is available. Just make sure the one you get doesn't jump out of gear (especially 3rd). Plenty of parts are available. Can you tell I like the D-14s and 15s? On second thought, maybe I should be keeping this info under my hat. Ya, just forget everything I just said, lol!

Thanks much!
Marc

That's fine if you want to use a hand clutch for live PTO.

I had an 8N. Bought it for snow moving, also plowed the occasional garden. It was a toy.

I have a MF-135. You can't have mine. Its sturdy enough to really plow, though the loader on mine was too heavy and took most of the weight off the rear wheels which made it helpless in snow without tire chains. But it plowed 24 acres a year, planted, cultivated, mowed hay, baled hay, all those things on a sip off gasoline.

Today I use the 135 for planting and spraying and a JD 4020 (definitely not a "utility" tractor) for some tillage and some spraying and for loader work. The day it arrived, I spent all afternoon with the 135 trying to open a path through snow drifts, and the 4020 just drove in not needing the drifts cleared at all. The 4020 won't go through a 7' high garage door but it does more work in a day than two untility tractors and if gas (like mine is) the purchase price is not significantly different from the smaller utility tractors. You will make up some of that price saving in the cost of fuel, but when I bought mine the $4000 difference in price from gas to diesel paid for 14 years of gasoline at off road prices. Those 14 years aren't up yet.

Don"t get rid of the Super-C. I have eight tractors and the Super-C is my favorite. My wife may have to bury me on it! I used to bale hay with it, but without live PTO it"s not as easy. The Super-C has been the best tractor I"ve ever used for snow plowing. -See photos in the Tractor or Implement Galeries. The Massey 135 would be a very good choice, as others have said, but I like a little more HP so, My choice would be a D-17 Allis. It"s been the absolutely the BEST hay baling tractor with high-low speed changing on the go! It also has live PTO, power steering and wide front. My 756 Farmall and G-VI Moline just sit and watch the others work. The D-17 is the one I use most, even for loader work. The Super-C would out plow the A-John Deere with a 7 ft snow bucket (twice as fast). I even sold the loader for the Super-C to go back to using the dozer blade for snow plowing. Buy another tractor then decide if you must to sell one of them!

In the size you are talking about, the Massey 135 in gas or Diesel is the absolute best tractor ever made (and this is coming from a Deere fan). The Ollie 550 is probably as good a tractor, but may be harder to get parts/service for. The Ford Jubilee and derivatives is also a good choice if you can find one reasonably. 8N's are all right but a little light and not likely to have live hydraulics or PTO, also might be overpriced for the amount of tractor you get. You might not get much for the Super C, except maybe from a collector as it has far fewer uses than the tractror you want (live PTO, live hydraulics, 3 point hitch, etc that the Super C doesnt have). just my $0.02.

Super C does have live hydraulics, but not live pto and can be fitted with 3 point hitch.

Don't worry about the parts for the Oliver 550 or 55. Plenty of availability and to be truthful, very seldom a need for them.

If I was in your shoes and could only have one tractor,it would definately be an Oliver Super 55 or 550. Fully independent PTO and hydraulics, meaning they don't stop when you push the clutch all the way down, unlike most utilities where the transmission stops with the clutch half way down and the PTO stops with it all the way down. Bullet proof valve in head engine, great weight and balance.None better for that vintage.

Folks sure love those N Fords, when they don't know anything about them.

Bush hogging is a lot more fun with a live position control 3pt hitch (hydraulics being live; setting the height with a position lever rather than an on/off lever). And a live pto.

Snow blowing _requires_ a slow reverse gear & a live pto.

A loader also is much more fun with live hydraulics & power steering.

Some N series tractors don't have any of that, and most don't have several of those items.

What you are looking for is a late 1950's through 1960's tractor with those options. Most manufatuerers made these advances during this time frame.

Those old tractors without these features are great to collect & restore & look at.

A Ford N would be a step down for you. An N has a 3pt hitch; but in every other way it is less of a tractor than what you have now.

As to wide front vs narrow front; I have a loader on an IHC H tractor narrow front with it property wighted; and I have a NH compact loader tractor with wide front & 4wd. That H is a rock solid loader. The little compact scared the heck out of me the first times I used it, terribly unstable. I added fluid to the tires, and a rock box on the 3pt, but it still scares me some days. Wheelbase & loader geometry make those rear wheels lift up, & the front powered axle keeps it moving rather than spinning out.

That old H (which does not have live pto, live hyd, or power steering.....) is much more stable even with a narrow front & being taller, because of the long wheelbase & proper weighting. Don't assume a wide front is always better than narrow front.

And hey, I have 4 Ford/NH tractors, so I'm not bashing them in a color war. :) Grey/red & blue are my favorite colors - despite the red & olive green on my place which I also like. You just have to look at the options a tractor has to fit your needs.

You have the best general purpose tractor ever built right now. Thus the term Farmall. You can plow, disk, mow, rake, push dirt, bale hay, cultivate and about anything else you can think of with a Super C. If I had to be limited to one tractor it would be the Super C.

I agree with some of the other posts. The tractor you have is a better tractor than an 8N. Add a 3 point and it and it will outdo the 8N. If you look at a Ford, get something newer than the 8N. The newer ones has live lift.

Don't let that narrow front scare you ! Set the rear out wide and put weights on the rear or in the tires and make sure your brakes are good and you can go anywhere or more than that Ford will do. If your Super C doesn't have one find a fast hitch or a 3pt conversion and use it.

I Have to agree with the rest. Don't get rid of the tractor you have..

The massey 135 or ford 3000 series will do great with the live pto and lift..

8n's are good tractors, but they don't have the live pto..

kyle...you're gonna get a lot of varied answers to THIS question. everyone has their own "personal favorite", and that's what they will tell you to get. but whatever, make sure it has live PTO, and since you mentioned a tiller, make sure it has a low range gear setting, you'll need to go slow with a tiller. i agree with everyone...keep the old C. you'll be sorry down the road if you don't. my "personal" choices are the MF, TO-35 or 135 or the ferguson TO-35. low profile, solid little tractors, reliable, fairly easy to get parts for, simple and easy to work on, and there are quite a few around so you shouldn't have much trouble finding one. like i said...that's my own personal choice but there are alot of other good tractors around that will fit your needs.

kyle, First off.....Have you taken leave of your sences? I echo Toms comment. An inheasreterd anything is a leagacy of you ancestors. Get is going and set it aside and figure out a way to make it usefull in your operation. Our YT Boards are littered with guys still looking for a particular tractor that....Dad, Granddad, Father-in-law had. I promise you will regret selling it after you do! As far as another tractor find a Diesel, first off with a FEL, Like a Ford 3000, 4000, or Massey equivlent, IH has good ones too. Get a "Fastline" for you area and you can look at the offerings that are available. Good Luck.
Later,
John A.

First off, DO NOT trade the inherited Farmall Super C off for anything - - KEEP IT. I am sure who you inherited it from would turn over in his grave. You will always regret getting rid of your family's history.
Second, you might want a MF 135 diesel.

First of all, I would not consider an 8N or any other gas tractor as the best general purpose tractor. Get you a diesel. Like a Ford 2000 or 3000, or a Massey Ferguson 135 or 150. You don"t sound like you"re going to be using your tractor every day. One of the most aggravating things about a gas tractor is finding the fuel tank empty after you walk away from it far awhile and having to refuel it. And if you let it sit for a few weeks or months the carburetor will probably be all gummed up and it won"t even run right if at all. But if it"s a diesel, you could walk away from it for several years even, come back and find most of the fuel still in the tank, stick a hot battery on it, fire it up and go to work. No carburetor to worry about. No spark plugs to change. No distributor cap or plug wires to change. No points to set. And diesel runs cooler, is far safer to store, and actually helps lubricate the engine because it"s an oil. Get a diesel. A Ford 3000 would probably be my first choice, followed by the Massey Ferguson 135, followed by the John Deere 830, followed by a 400 series International.

Massey Ferguson 65, or 860 Ford, compact, powerful, live power, easy on and off. My very favorite from experience.

Just my opinion but i would get something newer than a 8N just for the live PTO since you said bushhogging.8N doesn't have it. An Oliver 550 does and it is about the same size as a Ford and usually more HP. However if you don't have a ACGO dealer handy parts might be iffy if you need to work on it.

That being said you might look around and find one of the older small John Deere 3 cylinder diesels or even a gasser. Something like a 820-830 1010 or 1530 is a good size and reliable. Plus if you need work done or parts you can get them.

Allis D-15-17 would be a good choice also but I don't think they have live PTO, could be wrong in that. They are usually reasonably priced also.

I'm gonna say that probably one of the best all around small tractors and most used is a Massey Ferguson 135 or so. Zillions of them still going and being used every day.
