I replaced the 4WD actuator on my 1988 K2500 truck but do not know where the brown wire on the new harness splices in at. The is a plug on the back driver side of the transfer case with two wires (yellow/black, purple) screws in parallel with the ground. There is another plug in the driver side transmission behind the front drive shaft that has a square plug end that mounts vertically. Which is the right one?

The wire is connected to a switch on the driver's side; up high; on the transfer case.

Brown wire; will have power only when ignition is "ON". 4X4 lever position has NO effect on whether that particular wire has power; or not; just the ignition switch.

Post back; if you don't figure it out.

The only one I see is on the driver side near near the very back where the rear driveshaft connects. It is screwed into the housing under near a round red and stainless tag riveted to the transfer case housing. Is the wire on the truck also brown? The wire on the new harness is brown.

I'm almost certain the wire on the truck is brown; too. It's been a while; and I can't tell you any more from memory.

If you can wait day or so; I'll post a photo.
